Why it's not okay to upload someone else's mods

Recommended Posts

Wouldn't make any difference, given that most of the non-author submitted mods were knowingly downloaded from here in the first place. Besides, it's arguably against the rules to submit a "mod" that is just a link to a website.

Well I think that some of those re-uploaders just want to make it available at the workshop and just don't understand the modder has full rights about his/her content.

And nope, it's not against the rules. There are a lot of examples in Skyrim modding, or modding for Rome 2: Total War.

It makes me feel ill seeing "authors" on Russian sites posting other peoples mods! It's everywhere on them!

It happens a lot on [snipped].

There is original work on there. I've downloaded some Mafia 1 and 2 mods from there that were made by good Russian modders.

But sadly some on there don't care very much about this sort of thing, different strokes.

Eset (a Russian antivirus program) blocks most of the stuff from that site - which tells you something.

p.s:

Make sure you have Ublock and Noscript before ever visiting or it will make your eyes bleed + other dangers.

1) Don't link to that site.

2) Why are you reviving a thread over two years old?  Was what you added to a long dead conversation so important that a thread revival was necessary?

ESET is Slovakian ?

I've seen a few topics elsewhere where people say it's Russian.

Thank you.  I just learnt something today!  :D

Sorry Sith Holocron, I didn't realize it was so old.

Someone was asking about it on Steam and I did say at first what I thought it probably was.

After a bit of Googling which also had this thread in the search results, my suspicions were confirmed.

Exactly as the words suggest.

Stealing a mod is taking what the user created and redistributing it without their permission.

That is, you are not allowed to redistribute (take and use in modpacks or your own mod) without the EXPRESSED permission of its original creator.

- Mods, Can we, like Append a section to the site rules about mod theft, so things are more clear?..

Oh wait, here it is: "All content on Deadlystream must be uploaded by the original creator/owners of the content. Uploading content that is owned by someone else is strictly prohibited, unless explicit permission can be demonstrated by the uploader. If you are found to upload content that is owned by another person without explicit evidence of permission, the first offense will result in a warning via PM and removal of said content. Any additional infractions will result in a permanent ban."

Alright, I can't redistribute. It means I can't upload a mod that is or has something that was made by someone else right?

And what if I made a mod and in the preview picture it has a mod from someone else? Lets say that I create a mod for swords, but in the pic it has a character holding the sword I made and he is using a modded robe. Note that I didnt upload the robe just the sword. Can this be considered stealing?

As long as the mod you uploaded didn't include those files for the robe, and you made it clear that only the sword was your mod and the robe was another mod, then it would be fine.

Because it is simply a picture, it is a bit confusing, but I would say it isn't against the rules, since it has been done many times on Deadlystream.

That's an oddly specific example..

Are you asking if a screenshot for your mod page could be considered stealing?

While generally the theft would be in the actual content within the ZIP files, there is always the assumption users could make if you have other mods installed while you take screenshots, so it's still best to avoid it if possible.

However, if you take the screenshots themselves from another mod page, well that's another issue.

I was wondering why this thread even exists...

Roth9, can't you just tell us what Mod exactly you want to upload and which resource you'd like to use, to answer your query more specifically?

Note, that you can use free texture resources from the internet though, as long as they are not belonging to a mod/ the author restricted them in any way.

I still didn't get the answer I need.

Then let me ask this way: Besides uploading or redistributing a mod that is not mine, is there any other way that a mod can be stolen?

Taking content that is not yours and using it with out permissions would be considered "stealing" that person work. Could we realistically police that sort of thing? No. Really I am not here to be the mod nazi nor am I here to be the morality police, just do what is right and go from there.

Roth9, could you answer this previously asked question?  And a question from me, why are you asking this specifically?

Why is this conversation so long? At this point one would be justified in suspecting that the reason is this: if he tells you specifically what he wants to do, you'll be able to just tell him "yes, that's stealing", and that's just game over. Whereas speaking in abstract terms he gets to interpret and rationalise whatever definition of stealing you give him.

What's stealing is common sense 99% of the time. If you're working with some weird edge case, just tell us what it is specifically, or we'll be here till Christmas.

So now I am under suspicion? Is that it? By your deffinition of "yes, that's stealing", you could charge someone just because you dont like said person and said "no, that's not stealing" because its a friend of yours. This is why I do rather have a more certain deffinition.

But, anyway, I will answer your questions since you are so curious to the point of "witch hunting me":

Recently, I modified a graphic mod for my personal use, it is a mod created by another and still has some of its owner textures and others that I created. Then, I took a print screen and sent it to a friend that showed it online, and I was worried that someone would clain that I stole that mod. Note that I didnt share it.

Thats it. So, am I a mod thief?

Also Sith Holocron, I am not your subordinate and I neither owe you anything. So, for future references, if you wish something from me, ask nicely or at least say "PLEASE" before the question, okay?

Nobody cares at all what you do off this site. The only way it is considered stealing is if you upload assets, modified or not, to this site you did not create or obtain credit for. Screenshots are not assets.

Then you're good, no worries. Feel free to post some screenshots of your gameplay, it's only an issue if you upload it as a mod without permission, which you know, of course.

But just to answer your other concern, since its deadlystream policy listed in the Rules section, permission rules apply to all members of the deadlystream community and I do not know of any mod that has been uploaded to DS where the admins knew it had broken rules on permission and, then, been allowed to stay.

Your point is valid and among other communities you may run into issues like that, but that's not how our community operates.

Yay, specific information, that nectar of the gods.

And yeah, what Canderis said.

Witchhunting not intended, btw. It's just that I got dizzy watching this conversation chase its own tail.

At the end of the day lets just treat mods like you would any photo someone posted as the community around photography feels very similar to the modding community.

The photographer owns the right to the photo, taking the photo without their explicit consent and then distributing it as your own is stealing. Also, if you took their photo and hosted it on your site which in turns give you traffic to your site and not to them, without permissions or worse in direct violation of them asking not to redistribute their photo, then I would also consider that a form of stealing.

Make sense?

Canderis says that nobody cares as long as it is outside this forum and that screenshots are not assets.

JC2 says to not worry, that it is not stealing.

Then Tyvokka says that yes it is stealing.

....and you guys wondered why I wanted a clear defitinition? You cant came to an agreement about your own rules.

Tyvokka didn't say taking a screenshot yourself (where others' mods happen to be installed in your game) is any form of thievery. Pretty sure "the photographer owns the right to the photo" should be fairly self-explanatory.

Hopefully this clears things up,

DO NOT STEAL Screenshots or assets (be it files or textures) from other users and pass them off as your own.

If you got the texture from their mod, you must ask permission to include it and only after obtaining it do you get to include it in your own mod. That means if you use it as a "template" without their permission, you still stole their file to begin with.

If you take a screenshot that they took and pass it off as your own, this is also stealing. There is no middle ground with this. A screenshot they took is still their property, and you must ask for permission to use it in your mod page (preferably also crediting them for letting you use it)

If this entire thread is your roundabout way of admitting you recently used either a screenshot another user took or texture files as a "template without obtaining permission, then please for everyone's sake either inform the user/ask for their permission or take it down.
