About This File

ABOUT:

This mod replaces every skybox and every planetary backdrop in the game with a new high resolution version made from scratch.
This includes a replacement of every skybox model to fix all the glaring issues with the original.
There are also some additional minor changes that either fix issues with the vanilla environments or serve to better blend ingame terrain and skybox.
Other than that I recommend you just check out the screenshots as pictures say more than a thousand words :) or check the video to see the animated skyboxes.

Click the following image to see additional interactive screenshot comparisons:

There are also add-ons with new skyboxes for the following mods:

If you find any issues or have any other comments, please let me know and I'll see what can be done.

INSTALLATION:

If you have a previous version of this mod installed, remove it before installing the new version or you might run into some issues.

For installation instructions check the read-me files of the individual downloads. Usually it's just copying files to your Override folder. For the mod to take full effect you need a savegame where you have not yet left Dantooine.

COMPABILITY:

This mod is not compatible with any mod that edits skyboxes in any way. This includes mods that only edit their models. There might also be rare incompabilities with mods that edit non-skybox area models if those models are also edited by this mod.

PERMISSIONS:

You may NOT redistribute any textures included in this archive without my explicit permission. You may however use all the models as long as you give me credit.

A vast improvement over the vanilla KOTOR skyboxes, Kexikus. This collection of KOTOR skyboxes felt vibrant and more alive. Manaan's underwater research facility's sunlight through the water was a subtle and interesting touch. Korriban felt like an old, dusty place of extreme evil belied by the calming twilight of its sun and the expansiveness of its mountain ranges that impress a beautifully desolate world. There were what looked like recycled rudimentary cloud designs between Dantooine and Korriban which I thought seemed statical amid the rest of their environments. I admire your work - and something I think could make you even better is observing how detail and pattern can create dynamic skyboxes from static textures like in Xarwarz's Dantooine 2012 (illusion of movement) and Vurt's Exterior Textures part 2 mod (depth through pattern), respectively. You're giving me another reason to do another tour through KOTOR! Keep on keepin' on!

Thanks for the detailed review :)

I'm glad you like the pack and I also have to agree with you about the Dantooine and Korriban clouds. Those two are the oldest skyboxes with more than basic clouds and back then I didn't have the knowledge to make the detailed and more realistic clouds that are seen in other skyboxes, and it's quite likely that I'll remake them at some point (no promises though). If I do I intend to keep the feeling of the Korriban skybox as I really like how it turned out except for the clouds detailed shapes, but Dantooines sky I'd probably edit more to get more depth as you said and also to get this calm, peaceful feeling that's present with the vanilla skybox.

Really nice stuff here, love having more quality detailed surroundings for being in the game and exploring and just being part of the world.

One small problem I encountered.  When extracting the files from HQ Skyboxes part2, LKA_tree05.tga doesn't extract properly from that folder.  I downloaded it again to see if I got the same error and low and behold it still says there's a data error and the file is broken.  Not sure if it's something on my end or what, just wanted to report that to you.

I'll have a look at it and if necessary I'll fix it for the next update.

In the meantime, you could download the whole pack as one file from nexusmods. Maybe that'd work better since it's not divided into parts as it is here on DS :) Or you just wait for the update^^

Kexikus - Just wanted to say how beautifully done these are.

I just installed them and have only seen Korriban and Unknown World, but wow... Just wow. Makes for such a cool, complete experience.

Thank you!

I just wanted to say that this mod is absolutely beautiful! Very well done! A very much needed overhaul to the game's skyboxes.

To be honest, they're a temporary solution for the Taris building backdrops in the apartments being cut off. The reason for this is that the buildings on my texture are placed different than on the vanilla texture, thus when the texture is cut off, some buildings would be cut off. I had fixed all of those issues for the Upper City but forgot about the apartments, so then I tried to fix it for those but ended up with issues in the Upper City. So I made two textures, one for the Upper City and one for the apartments and hex-edited those two models to use the new texture. But I intend to remake LTS_Bsky01 completely, making this temporary fix unnecessary (hopefully).

Does anyone knows if this is compatible with xediixarwarz's planet textures mod that exist on Mod DB?

It is. Xediis mods don't edit the skybox and backdrop textures.

I'm playing KoTOR 1&2 for the 1st time ever, a little late I know, but I hope their worth it, and as an experienced game player I know that Mods don't have to spoil games, but instead Improve games to be there absolute best, so before I play them, I've decided to get a few small mods that improve the look and feel of the game, without changing the story or gameplay, and out of the dozen I've seen so far, this is by far the most beautiful and polished, IMO, as such, I hope using this Mod will make my 1st time through the game even more Amazing, thank you for your hard work on making a dated game more Enjoyable

I know you've done more than enough for KOTOR, but I would appreciate it if you could do High Quality Skyboxes for KOTOR II.

  Thanx for the hard work!

Can you help me to understand what am I doing wrong here?

I'm following reddit's full build mod guide. And on Taris, along with your mod, I'm running Quanon's Taris Reskin

For some reason your game goesn't seem to load the texture's alpha channel or doesn't use it for transparency. I would guess that this is somehow GPU or OS related. Did you see similar issues in other areas?

Not yet. But I literally just arrived on Taris. Decided to start a new run after over 10 years last night.

DarthParametric suggested adding a TXI file for LTS_Bsky01 in another thread, and while that didn't work, changing the blending mode from punchtrhough to additive makes transparency work.

I'm on Windows 10 with a GTX 980ti, running GOG version, following reddit's kotor community full build guide

Gonna check for driver updates, and fiddle with Nvidia's control panel to see if it does any good

Thread where DarthParametric tries to help another user with the same problem:

Guide I followed:
