Movie-Style Holograms for End Game Cutscenes 1.1

About This File

This mod alters the (frankly terrible) holograms used in the cutscenes prior to boarding the Star Forge at the end of KOTOR to bring them more in to line with the style seen in the movies and TSL. For some unknown reason, Bioware decided to go with a weird texture-based approach that simultaneously looks both horrible and nothing like how Star Wars holograms are typically depicted.

Before:

After:

Changes:

  • Admiral Dodonna hologram model completely replaced with a new one based on her regular appearance. No longer has incorrect mirrored torso UVs.
  • Dodonna model split into sub-meshes for optimal hierarchical occlusion.
  • Vandar model given some mesh tweaks to remove some intersection issues.
  • Models now use mesh-based transparency rather than additive texture blending.
  • Custom keyframes added to animations to facilitate mesh-based alpha approach and added meshes.
  • New animated textures for Vandar and Dodonna created based on their regular appearance textures.
  • Minor alteration to one shot during the DS cutscene to prevent Dodonna leaping out of frame while Vandar is speaking.

Known Issues:

  • Because meshes do not self-occlude, there are some artefacts during certain shots. For example, seeing the neck through the chin.

wonderful idea, will test ASAP,. Looks WAY more neat/sharp according to videos.

what about the color changes?  consequence of the new animated textures for Vandar & Dodonna or just result of tweaking with the original models/textures??

As per the description, I created new textures for both based on their non-hologram appearances. These were desaturated and then tinted blue, then set up in a 2x2 flipbook animation with varied brightness to get the flickering effect.

The vanilla Dodonna hologram model actually uses different UVs, which you can see if you look at the original version videos. You can see the medals on her chest are mirrored. I created a whole new hologram model for her based on the regular appearance model, so it retains the proper non-mirrored UVs. Vandar's hologram model didn't change the UVs, but I did have to edit the eye meshes to accommodate the way they faked the blinking with textures (they animate brief swaps between two different sets of eyeball meshes). The intersection didn't play nicely with the mesh alpha approach.

so they can be tinted with any color alternatives, then??? (that blue tint looks great/appropiate anyway but just asking)

Yes. Unlike TSL, K1 has no specific hologram mode/effect. The colour is entirely derived from the texture just like any regular model. You could have pink holograms, if you wanted such an abomination.

in pink?? hahaha.

thank you, great to know that's possible too. To see how it looks in blue first, right??

These actually look LESS like movie holograms for being all-blue and lacking the glowing outline.

Seriously, go actually look at some screenshots of the holograms from the movies. While they're heavily color-tinged (usually blue), it doesn't override the original colors with blue like the TSL holograms do; you can still see that Yoda's skin is green, you can see reds and browns in Jedi robes, stuff like that. And they have a glowing outline similar to Force Ghosts (but are further distinguished by visible scan lines and other such artifacts).

So something's happened that's causing this not to load properly and I'm getting stuck at a black screen when the scene is supposed to play. I thought it was because it was conflicting with the "Revisted End Game Cutscene" mod that I had installed alongside this one. I did a fresh install, and reinstalled all the other mods, except that one and kept this one. I don't have any other mods that would be affecting the files for this stage of the game. What could possibly cause it to not load like this?

There's no way to know when you don't provide any actual information. Provide the following:

  • A list of every mod you have installed, and the specific order you installed them in
  • Attach the STUNT_42.mod and STUNT_44.mod files from your Modules folder
  • Attach a text file listing the contents of your Override folder (open a command window in the Override, -> dir /b > override.txt).

My mods listed in order of install (and mostly alphabetical) and are currently all compatible with K1R without issues (mostly):

  •   Reveal hidden contents

Thanks for helping me sort through this!

The very first node of the LS DLG is not from my mod. It has an added node with a comment from @zbyl2 that fires an added script. So either some other mod is editing those modules and is actually the one at fault (all my mod does is change the stunt models), or you didn't actually do a clean install and left behind MODs in the module folder.

I did do a clean install so it's coming from another mod then. Thanks a lot for this, I'll have to look for the issue.

Thank you for this mod, DarthParametric. It works perfectly on PC, but when I try to use it on iOS, I get the black screen bug (with the sounds of Dodonna's cutscene playing in the background) which another user already told you about in 2021. Even when this mod is the only one I install, the cutscene still won't play. I read that while modding the iOS version of the game, one is supposed to rename mod file names to lowercase. If I do that with the Twisted Rancor Trio or Rakatan Movie-Style Holograms, they are loaded correctly and become fully compatible with the latest iOS version of KOTOR, but Dodonna's Blue Hologram causes the game either to crash (if lowercase names are used) or to display a black screen. Could you tell me, please, if you ever tested this mod on a jailbroken iOS device?

No. My mods are only made for/tested on Windows. Installation and use on Mac/Linux/Android/iOS/Switch/Xbox is entirely at the enduser's own risk.
