HD NPC Portraits
for Knights of the Old Republic

This modification adds high resolution rendered portrait images for NPCs. The 1K portraits have 256x the resolution of the 64x64 originals. The portraits are rendered to match the poses, expressions, colors, and lighting of the vanilla portraits as closely as possible given the following constraints:

  • Only vanilla textures (and my own additional maps based on same) are used

While the textures are quite low-res, most of the work was in material setup using a modern rendering engine, so even the vanilla textures still wind up looking much better than they have any right to. This is because of real lights, shading, and material properties, of which the original diffuse textures are only a part. I didn't really redo geometry, beyond appropriate use of edge split and subdivision surface modifiers.

It also includes 1K versions of the darkened placeholder portraits before you meet characters in-game.

 

BONUS

There's a portrait for Trask Ulgo, because why not. Also I've included additional alternative non-vanilla expressions for Mission & Jolee because I don't care for their vanilla expressions.

 

INSTALL / UNINSTALL

To install, copy the TPC files from the package Override/ folder to the Override/ folder for your KOTOR game installation.

To uninstall, remove the TPC files for this package from your KOTOR game Override/ folder.

Also, Channa isn't the only playable character in BOSSR? There is also Kobayashi, Verbal, Mech'hanic, Malak and maybe a few more.

You might want to tweak the specular in a few cases. HK's gun in particular looks far too plastic, and HK himself could also do with a much sharper, narrower specular.

I'm surprised that Silveredge9 is still active. I wonder if he can do an HD version of Brotherhood of Shadow.

He's not. Silveredge9 gave permission for anyone to use his work in BOSSR in their own mods meaning ndix UR made the Channa icon. Though have no fear, even without Silveredge9 an HD BOSSR is very possible.

I think PC portraits for K1 are more likely than anything for TSL, but either one of those involves a lot of work so we'll see...

 

"BOS:SR includes many portraits, maybe I will do a separate package for them." <== from the description, that's why Shadow is listed as 'bonus' at this time. Your list is roughly correct, there are also 4 portraits for Shadow.

 

 

You might want to tweak the specular in a few cases. HK's gun in particular looks far too plastic, and HK himself could also do with a much sharper, narrower specular.

 

Agreed. The body uses an IOR of raw steel, the gun uses more of an anodized aluminum IOR. I agree that they're not looking super realistic--they are somewhat decent matches for the vanilla specular look though. HK was an earlier effort, there might be some things I learned that I could apply to it...

No worries, it doesn't sound pretentious. You're right. However, there's nothing I can do about that at this time. This is why I put:

  • Unable to adjust facial expressions via skin deformation

Into the description. Hopefully in the future I can fix problems like that, but today it is not possible. People who are smiling or mad looking are both wrong. Thanks for the feedback.

well well now .... loved the more "mature" Mission Vao, HK and Juhani.

Very interesting Bastila alternative, too oh yep.
