EA shuts down Visceral. Their Star Wars game to be revamped.

Recommended Posts

More details of why Visceral was closed:

https://kotaku.com/the-collapse-of-viscerals-ambitious-star-wars-game-1819916152

1. Visceral lacked the man power and couldn't hire more staff.

2. Amy Hennig didn't trust the Visceral Staff.

3. Half of the Visceral were busy with Battlefield Hardline and it's DLCs.

4. Jade Reymond's studio(Motive) was supposed to help Visceral, but EA put them on Battlefront 2 Campaign instead.

5. Making a 3rd person game by Frostbite Engine was pretty hard.

This part was pretty painful:

“She (Amy Hennig) was giving these massive presentations on the story, themes,” said one person who worked on Ragtag. “EA executives are like, ‘FIFA Ultimate Team makes a billion dollars a year.’ Where’s your version of that?”

What a troubled a company.

I really wish Disney licensed out the Star Wars games to someone else besides EA.

But who?

My vote would be CDPROJEKT but then we'd never see Cyberpunk 2077.

I'm not familiar with Konami. Why are they a bad company?

I will go head and say Activision is another company that has no business doing SW games either based on their terrible treatment of the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games.

Didn't you hear about their business practices? Their treatment of employees, Hideo Kojima, and Metal Gear?

I have not. I'm guessing it's pretty bad though.

"Pretty bad" is a kind description. They removed Hideo Kojima's name from the cover of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, made their employees work in intolerable conditions, and turned Metal Gear into a generic zombie game.

It would be interesting to see a SW game by Rockstar. I'm not saying it would be good, but it would be interesting nonetheless.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier, but maybe Disney could get companies like Raven (makers of JO and JA) and Obsidian to make them. After all, they both made some great SW games. I would really like to see Obsidian make a game with the new characters and time period of the ST. As long as they are not rushed like they were when they made KOTOR 2.

Thanks for the info. They do sound pretty bad.

Okay, subtract the microtransactions and the obligatory controversial violence, sex, drugs, nudity, and language, and we're good to go.

They also used the resources from Metal Gear Solid 3 to make a Japanese Pachinko slot machine instead of remastering it as they teased.

Despite being out of topic, I think that despite what the Internet believed, Kojima himself removed his name from the cover. If Konami wanted to actually remove his name, they wouldn't have allowed him to bring his name in the game more than 100 times in the credits. (They would have also removed his character model completely)

I think he wasn't satisfied with the Free Roam part hence is why he didn't bring up his name anytime players go into Free Roam mode. (Which was the weakness of the game Imo)

IMO, Disney Should instead revive Lucasarts. AAA game costs are too High that most of the publishers prefer to make their own IPs. (Like GTA, Elder Scrolls, Fallout etc) than to make Star Wars games where Disney might get a share of the sales.

And If Disney revives Lucasarts, it's better that they focus on making games with lower budget (AA) than making heavy expensive games that force the Developers to add Microtransactions and DLCs to their Games.

As I said, interesting. (Not that any of those would have been that bad from Scandinavian-or-so's point of view than they appear to be when you just read what people say about them.)

I'm just saying that excessive violence, nudity, or language don't fit in Star Wars.

Well, I wouldn't go that far.. Just none of the modern versions of those things. (violence is kind of less grindhouse since cuts are cauterized, but still) Also, Star Wars has its own diverse vocabulary of in-universe profanity.

...but I'm getting off topic.

I agree. The PS2/Xbox/GC era was a very special time that is sadly is over.

A lot of great games came out of that era. Lucasarts in particular had some great Star Wars games- the KOTOR series, the original Battlefront 1 and 2, Republic Commando, Rogue Squadron 2 and 3- were fantastic. Then things started to slow down for Lucasarts.

Yep. Thanks to the awful management that cancelled Kotor 3,Ruined LA's relationship with Pandemic(which was the main reason that LA outsourced battlefront 3 to FRD), Ruined Galaxies and etc.

Yes, and they started giving us "wonderful" games like The Force Unleashed 1/2 and Star Wars Kinect.

And like the other poster said, they cancelled KOTOR 3 and guaranteed we would never get a real Battlefront 3.

Not to mention, they canceled Republic Commando 2 as well.

Never played Galaxies sadly, but I know enough to know what went down.

Yeah, the Force Unleashed 1/2 was one of the first events where things started going downhill for Lucasarts. I think the point I was trying to make earlier was that the mid-2000's Lucasarts games were great.

But yeah, considering they cancelled KOTOR3, Republic Commando 2 and the original Battlefront 3, they royally screwed themselves over. As you said, the players got crappy games like TFU and Kinect. KOTOR3 actually existed in pre-production at Obsidian for a time before it got pulled, as the article states below.

Never got to play Galaxies either, but there's a guy on Youtube who explored most of the planets' surfaces before the wipe occurred. Needless to say it looked interesting.

And we all know how well Free Radical's poor  management and incompetence dug Battlefront 3 into an early grave.

Well, theres a Eurogamer article for that, too. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-05-04-free-radical-vs-the-monsters

TLDR: Start at the first mention of Darrel Rodrigues and you will see that the Publisher Lucasarts was cutting every corner they could.

Free Radical was in just as tough of a position as Obsidian was during this time and even managed to finish with some resemblence of a game.

The only difference here is that Lucasarts cancelled Battlefront 3 and started to focus on less "risky" ventures like Star Wars Kinect. (I would be interested behind what happened with The Force Unleashed 2, but I have a feeling it was a similar one)

BTW, you do not want to hear what happened when Disney took over. It's kind of equally depressing.

They were sure great! It almost makes me sad when I look at back at how awesome SW games use to be until Lucasarts ruined everything. When the next generation of consoles came out, something changed for Lucasarts, and the quality of their games from that point on really show, I think.

That article makes me sad. KOTOR 3 by Obsidian would have been epic, but thanks to Lucasarts, we'll never get to experience that, because we all know EA will never allow that.

Interesting. I remember hearing something about a "combat upgrade" that supposedly ruined it, but that's all I know.

Here's really good article that explains Lucasarts tragic downfall for anyone interested.     http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2014/02/12/fall-of-the-empire-how-inner-turmoil-brought-down-a-legendary-studio.aspx

Well, I myself didn't play Galaxies. but from some fans in the forums I have heard that originally Star Wars Galaxies was a sandbox mmo game where you have the choice to choose between more than 20 professions(For example bounty hunter, dancer, farmer, doctor, weapon merchant etc) which people loved in it.

For that combat upgrade I don't know what it did but no one really liked that update.

Wow(World of warcraft) released in 2004(which was a theme park mmo game) and managed to dominate every mmo game. Then Lucasarts decided to add a new update with the name of NGE(New game enhancement) to turn it into a wow clone. Unfortunately that NGE update ruined that game for original fans.

By the way if you want to play Galaxies there is a dedicated community that are making pre cu(Combat Upgrade) servers for it. You just need to get a copy of that game from somewhere:

http://www.swgemu.com/forums/index.php

By the way why do you guys hate Force Unleashed that much ? It was a promising franchise that could become great with the second game.(Some franchises need a sequel to hit home run like Tekken which the first game wasn't that great)

Unfortunately it failed at that due to this fact that the second game was rushed.(Only one year development time)
