Evidence of Juhani being a Lesbian from KotOR's Game Files

Leilukin

11,822 views

The fact that Juhani from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a canon lesbian character is fairly common knowledge among LGBTQ+ fans of Star Wars. However, occasionally I still see people who do not know that the first KotOR game has the very first confirmed gay character in any Star Wars media, including the old Star Wars Expanded Universe; there are some other people who actually believe that Juhani is bisexual.

Therefore, as a lesbian and someone who has made mods for the Knights of the Old Republic games and written a detailed Juhani romance guide, I would like to present hard evidence from the game files to point out that Juhani is in fact a lesbian, a woman who is exclusively attracted to women.

The most crucial evidence comes from k_hjuh_dialog.dlg, Juhani’s main dialogue file which contains all the conversations covered in my Juhani Romance Guide. If you use KotOR Tool to browse the game files, k_hjuh_dialog.dlg is under KotOR I > BIFs > templates.bif > Dialog. I recommend using DLGEditor to view the .dlg files from KotOR games.

Here is a screenshot of my DLGEditor with the most relevant part of the k_hjuh_dialog.dlg file:

RU3WMDW.png

The highlighted dialogue shown in the screenshot (”I feel I must apologize for the way I acted towards you before, in the grove. It was wrong of me.”) is the beginning of your first personal conversation with Juhani after Juhani joins your party. Here is a video of the conversation in question:

As shown in the screenshot above, once you begin this conversation, the script k_hjuh_p17 will fire, and this is the source of the script in question:

void main()
{
    int iGender = GetGender(GetPCSpeaker());

    if (iGender == GENDER_FEMALE)
    {
        SetGlobalBoolean("T_JUHANIROM", TRUE);
    }
}
(In KotOR Tool, you can see the source script k_hjuh_p17.nss under KotOR I > BIFs > scripts.bif > Script, Source)

As you may have guessed from the above script, k_hjuh_p17 sets the Global Boolean T_JUHANIROM to TRUE if, and ONLY IF, the player character is female. The T_JUHANIROM global is used by the game to check if Juhani’s romance is active or not. In other words, the game activates Juhani’s romance ONLY IF your player character is female, as soon as you start Juhani’s personal conversation after she joins your party. If your player character is male, Juhani’s romance will NOT be activated.

Here is the hard evidence from KotOR's game files that Juhani is a lesbian, a woman who is exclusively attracted to women. Juhani is NOT straight. Juhani is NOT bisexual.

The game used to have a bug that allowed male player characters to access Juhani’s romance, which is probably why some thought that Juhani is bisexual. However, the bug had been fixed in later patches. By fixing the bug, the game has made sure that ONLY a female player character can romance Juhani.

Even though the word “lesbian” or “gay” is never used in any of the KotOR games, it does not change the fact that Juhani is a woman character who can only be romanced by a woman player character, which means Juhani is gay, a lesbian.

Furthermore, I have read articles mentioning that Stanley Woo, Juhani's writer, had confirmed that Juhani is gay. Unfortunately, I cannot find the actual source of it. It is likely that Stanley Woo posted about it on the BioWare Social Network forums, but the forums are already offline.

In conclusion, Juhani is a canon lesbian character and has always been intended to be such.

I would also like to emphasise that I DO NOT support any mods that make Juhani a romance option for male characters under any circumstances, because such mods would be erasing the identity of the very first confirmed lesbian character in any Star Wars media. Not to mention, Juhani is the ONLY confirmed LGBTQ+ character in the entire KotOR series (Belaya from KotOR 1 and Luxa from KotOR 2 are heavily implied to be gay or bisexual, but their sexuality is never confirmed). Please respect LGBTQ+ representation and the identities of canon LGBTQ+ characters.

If you haven't seen this video yet, I think you might like it :D here you go For Juhani. I love Juhani to bits, and I do share your feelings, being gay myself. By the way, representation is also important among Star Wars fans, as some people seem to think there are no gay Star Wars fans for some reason, so it's cool that you're open about it. Back to Juhani, I was so disappointed not to see her in the KotOR comics. I even wrote to John Jackson Miller about using gay characters, and I wasn't the only one, there was this kid asking the same thing at the back of issue 23. I think they chicken because they know their fan base. Hopefully one day, they all say, but things are changing just about everywhere else while we Star Wars fans, in 2017, are still waiting. Oh well, at least we have fan art and fan fictions and mods, can't take that away from us ❤️ If only I were half as dedicated as some of the big modders on this site, we'd already have a same-sex relationship mod with voiceovers and everything.

@Kreia

Thank you for sharing that video! It must took quite a lot of effort to put those unused dialogue and custom scenes together.

I totally agree with your comments. Representation is important. I made gay mods for KotOR 2 out of my frustration of the lack of LGBT content in the game and I know there are other fellow LGBT fans of KotOR who would like to see such mods exist.

Regarding the lack of official Juhani content outside the first KotOR game, I must say, as much as I love KotOR 2, I'm very disappointed that the game never acknowledges Juhani, both as a character and a potential love interest for Female Revan, since KotOR 2 assumes Female Revan is romantically involved with Carth, and Juhani is never even mentioned at all in the entire game.

If KotOR becomes canon again, I really hope we could see more of Juhani as well. Juhani is not only an amazing character in her own right, she is also important for gay fans of Star Wars since she was the very first confirmed gay character in any Star Wars media.

It's not like this wasn't known.  Why do you think Belaya attacks you on Korriban if you kill Juhani at the Grove?  ;)

Yeah, I know that about Belaya. Too bad the romantic subtext between Belaya and Juhani is more obvious only if you kill Juhani at the Grove.

I made this post because in case there's anyone who wants hard evidence of Juhani being a lesbian, I could just share this post. I've actually seen someone (not from this site) who not only thought that Juhani is bisexual, but also went as far as saying that calling Juhani a lesbian is bisexual erasure. In cases like this, i'm afraid only hard evidence from in-game files is going to convince them that Juhani is a canon lesbian character.

I get why you've posted it now. My information probably helps bolster your reasoning though.

That's the reason why you wouldn't want to play a mod like that but some people who like playing a male character (Me) would like Juhani to have some sort of good interaction besides whining and having a Jedi character. The only good thing Juhani offers is being a Jedi Party member and having the option to kill her in the grove to make way for Kay in the Recruitable Kay mod.

I am not against homosexuals or anything like that but I wouldn't mind something that will actually motivate me to talk to her. Besides, a mod is a mod and you do not have to download and install a mod if you don't want to.

I cannot agree with you at all about Juhani. I find Juhani a great character and she is severely underrated and underappreciated by the KotOR players at large. Honestly, I find the sheer amount of hate Juhani gets from male players very appalling.

Juhani had lived a very difficult life: her family fled to Taris after the Mandalorians committed a genocidal war against the Cathar species, then Juhani and her parents have to deal with the anti-alien bigotry on Taris, then Juhani lost her parents and she was sold into slavery until Revan freed her. That's even before she joined the Jedi Order, let alone you meeting her on Dantooine. Juhani has every right to be angry, upset and emotional about what happened to her. Reducing Juhani as nothing but a "whiny" character is very dismissive of her.

Even if you romance Juhani, it won't change Juhani's dialogue that much aside from some lines about her feelings for you, so why only the ability to romance her (as a male character no less, even though Juhani is a lesbian) can motivate you to talk to Juhani?

Since it appears that you hate Juhani so much that you think she does nothing but whining and that being able to kill her is a good thing, how is being able to romance Juhani going to change your opinion on her? Why a female character is only interesting or worth talking to if she is romantically involved with a male character, including male player character?

I'm fully aware that I don't have to download and install a mod if I don't want to, but that doesn't mean I can't criticize mods that I find offensive, including mods that perpetuate homophobia, like mods that allow male characters to romance a confirmed lesbian character like Juhani. As a gay person, homophobia is a very personal and relevant issue, and it still affects gay people like me on these days. When I see something that is homophobic, I have the right to criticize it.

Also, please say "gay people" instead of "homosexuals". A lot of gay people (myself included) find the word "homosexual" offensive and prefer "gay" instead.

It has nothing to do with her story for me it's very well written except how she doesn't explain how even made her way to the Jedi after being freed by Revan (That's something I'd actually like to know). The full blame for her hate (At least from me) comes from her accent and character model. If Bioware turned Juhani into an Echani (Or any other alien species that appear more "human" and I don't mean over sexualize her appearance) and made her voice sound more like Bastila's but kept the story and everything else exactly the same I bet she wouldn't have as much hate.

Even if you romance Juhani, it won't change Juhani's dialogue that much aside from some lines about her feelings for you, so why only the ability to romance her (as a male character no less, even though Juhani is a lesbian) can motivate you to talk to Juhani?

It's a mod, we don't need canon. Handmaiden isn't a Lesbian in canon but currently 473 people don't care and have downloaded your mod. In my opinion Party Swap motivates me to play as a female because I avoid the female character play through all thanks to Disciple who is just a flat out boring character unlike Handmaiden and your Handmaiden and Female Exile romance mod greatly improves the dialogue for Handmaiden with that mod installed.

The reason why a male romance would motivate me to talk to Juhani is I'd like to talk to her for a purpose: With Bastila, I find her just as bad as Juhani when it comes to Dialogue but I still talk to her for the romance which I rarely ever see because I'm too busy playing the game and not talking to Bastila but I still talk to her because of the romance in hopes I can see that kiss scene.

I also use the "Bi Carth" mod that makes the female romance appear for male characters, the reason I use this is because I actually like it when Carth is loving towards the player and not just yelling at me for talking to him, I am not gay in real life but when Carth yells at me from the start until the end of the game it kinda makes me want to make a mod that allows the player to chase after Carth on the unknown world just to kill him. The only downside to that mod is Carth still calls me "Woman" and "Sister" which I actually wouldn't mind if you could make your own version of the mod which I will probably download and use often.

I've already played the games many times over and I usually skip every dialogue because I know exactly what they are saying. Some party members I actually like to listen to as most of the time their stories because the tones, accents and the acting are top quality and are interesting even if you have heard it a hundred times over. some good examples are Mission, Canderous, Carth and HK-47 even though these stories do not have a real impact on the story meaning if I don't listen to them it doesn't matter in the end. Juhani's story while is great and a lot better than Bastila's story but her weird alien voice over ruins it completely and makes me skip her lines completely with the only motivation of going on with her is the Xor encounter. On the bright side I actually do her story unlike Jolee who rots in the medical hold until the ending credits.

Since it appears that you hate Juhani so much that you think she does nothing but whining and that being able to kill her is a good thing, how is being able to romance Juhani going to change your opinion on her? Why a female character is only interesting or worth talking to if she is romantically involved with a male character, including male player character?

I would definitely spare her in a vanilla play through and have her in my party but with a mod as good as Recruitable Kay I cannot resist but to take that option. Kay while she isn't romanceable by any means she is still a good character. While her life story isn't as tragic as Juhani's it still is enough for me to like it, in a certain point of view she's a Luke Skywalker how he lived an ordinary life as a farmer then is thrown into a life under the rebellion. Kay is an ordinary Jedi who joins your character and is thrown into a mission that can determine the fate of the Galaxy. Kay also (once you complete her sidequest) can recieve a unique Lightsaber and a red Jedi robe with custom stats. At some point, I will likely record videos of Kay similar to what you've done with Juhani (Which I highly approve of as your series of videos are very informative about Juhani) to visually show why I prefer Kay over Juhani.

I can understand that however I highly doubt someone will go out of their way to make a mod simply out of homophobia.

Also, please say "gay people" instead of "homosexuals". A lot of gay people (myself included) find the word "homosexual" offensive and prefer "gay" instead.

I am sorry if I insulted you, that was never the intent. I thought "Homosexual" was the complex term for "gays" not an insult and I'm not trying to be funny here. Also isn't the word "Gay" the word used for males and "Lesbian" the word used for females? If I am wrong can you please correct me.

In short, I do not hate Juhani for being a Lesbian I hate her alien voice and I dislike her head model. The only reason I would kill her is for Recruitment mods that replace Juhani I would not kill her in a vanilla playthrough by any means. I think her story and writing is fantastic but it's all ruined by her horrendous VO and since I've never played a heavily modded playthrough as a female I've never actually experienced the Juhani love story.

I am sorry if I offended anyone but that's my general opinion on Juhani at least from a male playthrough perspective. I also would like to say I'm sorry if this makes no sense either. If there is ever a mod that revoices all of her lines to sound more human and maybe replace her head similar to Shem's Juhani's new look mod I would likely use it and it could even change my perspective of Juhani.

It's a mod, we don't need canon. Handmaiden isn't a Lesbian in canon but currently 473 people don't care and have downloaded your mod.

Canon alone is not the only reason I want players to respect Juhani's canon sexuality as a lesbian. There are very few confirmed LGBT characters in Star Wars. Mods that make Juhani straight would be erasing the identity one of the very few confirmed gay characters in Star Wars. Not to mention, as stated in my blog post, Juhani is the ONLY confirmed LGBT character in the entire KotOR series.

On the other hand, mods that make straight characters gay, such as Bi Carth and my gay romance mods for KotOR 2, are made out of desire of wanting more gay content in a video game full of straight characters. Even if I make mods that turn every single character in KotOR gay, there are still plenty of straight characters in Star Wars and in mainstream media.

Media where most characters being gay are very rare, while it's common to see media that has nothing but straight characters and zero gay character. Mods that make straight characters gay won't take away "straight representation" because heterosexuality is still treated as the default sexuality, and there are still many straight characters in majority of the mainstream media, including Star Wars.

In addition, mods that change confirmed gay characters straight is reminiscent of the homophobic idea that gay people should be "turned straight" because heterosexuality is considered the "normal" sexuality and gay sexuality is not normal.

In conclusion, a mod that make Juhani straight is not the same as mods that make straight characters gay. The former is homophobic for taking away gay representation, while the latter benefits gay people by adding gay content to a game dominated by straight characters.

I also use the "Bi Carth" mod that makes the female romance appear for male characters, [...] The only downside to that mod is Carth still calls me "Woman" and "Sister" which I actually wouldn't mind if you could make your own version of the mod which I will probably download and use often.

 Unfortunately, I don't like Carth so I'm not even interested in the idea of romancing him as a male character, let alone making any mod just about Carth alone. The only reason I use the Bi Carth mod is to shut down his flirting when I'm playing a female character. Therefore, I'm afraid I won't be making my own version of Bi Carth mod.

I can understand that however I highly doubt someone will go out of their way to make a mod simply out of homophobia.

Intent is not magical. Just because someone may think they don't intend to hate gay people or calling gay people slurs, it does not mean they can't subconsciously perpetuate homophobic ideas that would harm gay people. Just because someone may claim they don't make a straight Juhani mod because they hate gay people, it doesn't mean gay people won't consider such mods homophobic.

If you're not gay, and gay people say something you do is homophobic, it's not appropriate to argue with them that you're not homophobic, since as a non-gay person, you are not affected by homophobia, you can't claim to know something is homophobic or not better than gay people.

I suggest you read this about words to avoid when you are talking about gay people, and why: https://www.glaad.org/reference/offensive

"Lesbian" means a women who is exclusively attracted to women, but the word "gay" is not exclusive to gay men. The word gay can also be used to describe lesbians.

I must say, I hate it when male players hate on Juhani because they consider her ugly. I'm strongly against the idea that female characters not being (conventionally) attractive is a valid reason to hate them. It reflects the sexist and misogynistic idea that women have to be attractive, fitting the mainstream beauty standards to be worthy of respect, especially by men.

I'm also against mods that change Juhani's species, because Juhani's identity as a Cathar is a very important element in her story: her family fled to Taris due to the genocide of Cathar species, and they suffer under the anti-alien bigotry on Taris. Xor also make direct references to Juhani being a Cathar. I don't mind mods that make Juhani look more similar to the other Cathars from other Star Wars media. On the other hand, changing Juhani's species, especially into a human, would be completely missing the point of her character.

please say "gay people" instead of "homosexuals". A lot of gay people (myself included) find the word "homosexual" offensive and prefer "gay" instead.

I can think of several reasons beside preference. You say "preference", people go "everyone is not here to please you" and such, especially these topsy-turvy times where trying/asking not to be a jerk makes you the real jerk. Sometimes I feel "homosexuals" unnecessarily makes us the issue that needs special attention, and I like to turn it around by saying non-heterosexuals instead, make the whole thing about their special label, which they're not used to. More importantly, "homosexual" lacks any romantic/affective connotation and automatically exiles the conversation to adult territory. So it's not really as whimsical or arbitrary as some would have you believe, words do carry weight is all :D

I must say, I hate it when male players hate on Juhani because they consider her ugly.

Oh please, the dialog itself is unbelievably inflammatory, I'm referring to the options you're given when talking to Juhani. Who wrote that crap? I've lost count of how many times you have the option of calling her a freak, a monster, of telling her how ugly she is and such. You also have the option to kill her on Dantooine or sell her to Xor, not that she would let you. Oh come on! Somewhere in development, a dude clearly had issues with this character. There's an idea for a mod, take all that crap out. Personally, I don't understand, she's an alien, she's supposed to look like a lioness, the mere fact of bringing attractiveness into the conversation is very weird. I get it, she's not the pretty little Human girl, that's why they made one for you, and gave her the name of Bast the Cat Goddess that originally belonged to Juhani. It's a game though, a fantasy world, so there's that, where's the fun in dating the girl they count on you to like based on what they assume are the limits of your imagination?

She is a very troubled character, I guess you're just not into that, but she offers a lot more than what you're saying. She gives you a lot of backstory on Revan, the Mandalorian Wars, and the attack on Cathar. You can't get up close and personal with her, you don't even get to see her stammer awkwardly over her feelings for you if you play a male character, but you do get to bond with her. Dak Vesser, Belaya, and Xor are all tied to her. She also has beef with Canderous, some lines can only be unlocked if they're both in your party and react to stuff (video here) On the Leviathan, she's the best choice you've got because she gets to keep her lightsaber. In the Temple of the Ancients, she's the only one beside Jolee that you can take with you. Like you said she is a Jedi character, which makes her handy in combat, but she also uses mind tricks in conversations if no one else in the party has the power.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I remember (when playing a male character) that Juhani has line that says something to the effect of she wished she 'had your heart as well'.  It's toward the end of the game after the Leviathan.

I've check Juhani's dialogue file and found out the line you mentioned is meant for a female player who has turned off Juhani's romance, since in DLG Editor, the comment for this line is "// female romance inactive". However, it seems like the line doesn't have gender check. I believe that it was an oversight on the developer's part and it does not mean Juhani can be romanced by a male player.

No offense intended but this seems like a "triggered" post.  I mean you can have a "romance" with Juhani as a female PC but not as a male PC in the vanilla game. So Juhani's sexual preference seems pretty obvious there. I understand that there was some confusion at first since the devs had a mistake in the first release that allowed male PC's the romance options. ( I suppose a missing gender check?) But that has been long ago corrected by the devs. So what controversy or confusion is there now? It seems obvious enough to me!

If some player has to argue that Juhani is bi because of that early mixup, that just seems like some sort of desperate denial problem.

But why take it as a personal offense if another player wants to change Juhani's romance options in their game? She is a fictional character, not a real person, and most importantly she is not you & you are not her, you are your own real person with your own real life. What somebody thinks about the character has nothing to do with you. The only people who have any right at all to be offended at modders changing Juhani's sexuality, it is the devs who created the character intending her to be lesbian; since she is their idea, they can take it as a personal insult to their work if they wish to.

For my own opinion:  Who cares?

The devs intended Juhani to be lesbian...well fine! It's a nice option for female PC's that the player can choose between the two characters of Carth & Juhani for romance, or they can romance both, or even neither, but they still are fictional video game characters, not real people.  Pixels & code have no sexuality.  Why do people have to be offended at the pretend sexuality of a video game character? The only thing I dislike about the Juhani romance is that it's unfortunately under-written/under-developed in general. (not that Carth's romance is much better, however)

If someone wants to make a mod to change the romance options for the characters, so what?  It's their game they can mod it to romance whichever character they want to.  Maybe they want to mod it because they like romancing Juhani & also like playing a male PC & they just want the best of both worlds without having to choose. It's their game, why should anyone feel like their real life "identity" is under attack?

And what about the mods to allow "gay" romance options to "non-gay" characters?  Are you equally offended by those? Somehow I expect you aren't against those, or that perhaps you might even applaud them.  Like "Gay is good, yay! Straight is bad, boo!" , right? 🙄 (of course I don't think that's really your sentiment, I was just being rhetorical)

So are you against all mods that change character romance options (which would be fair, albeit conceited), or only the ones that change Juhani's romance (which would be hypocritical)?

I think another reason some are still confused & think Juhani is supposed to be bi, is because as female PC you have two character romance options, as male PC you have only one. So I think some see Juhani & the devs early mixup & say "Oh Juhani's supposed to be bi, so you can have a second romance option with either PC gender" & they think Juhani is supposed to add "balance" to the romance options.

It's about respecting representation of marginalized people, like LGBT people, in media and fiction. Fan communities like modder communities are made up of people whose values are shaped by society. If someone makes a mod that makes Juhani straight, they endorse the idea that gay people can/should be "turned straight", which is a homophobic mindset that harms gay people in real life. Gay people like me have every right to criticize homophobic mods like these.

Juhani is a fictional character, but given the fact that she is canonically a lesbian, how you treat her lesbian identity reflects how you would treat real life lesbian's sexuality. Do you think these things happen in a vacuum? Do you really think ficiton has no impact on reality? Do you seriously think those modders who go out of their way to make mods to erase Juhani's lesbian sexuality do it out of nowhere? If you refuse to respect a fictional lesbian character's sexuality, how can real life lesbians like me believe that you would respect our sexuality?

So yes, I take issue with the existence of mods that make Juhani straight, and I know other LGBT people who hate such mods too. Just because other modders can do what they want, it doesn't mean I wouldn't criticize the modder and their mods and talk about why I find those mods offensive. Just because you don't care, it doesn't mean no one else should care.

Frankly, it's offensive that you tried to lecture me, a lesbian about why I shouldn't take offense from homophobic mods like the ones that make canon lesbian characters like Juhani straight, especially if you're not gay yourself.

Also, stop using the word triggered lightly. Triggers are a real problem that affects mentally ill people, and it's not a synonym to overreacting. It's extremely disrespectful that you don't take the concept of triggers seriously that you added quotation mark on the term and misused against a lesbian whom you think are overreacting for criticizing mods that reflect homophobic views that hurt real life gay people.

As a lesbian who happens to really enjoy Kotor, I really appreciate the work you've done to make me feel a touch more included in this wonderful pair of games!

Thank you for supporting my work! 🙂

Support for my mods from fellow LGBT people means a great deal.

I have decided to close this post to further comments, because I had already made my stance on the matter very clear in both the post and the comments. I will not engage with anyone who registers a Deadly Stream account just to argue with me over this post.

To anyone who tries to tell me "I'm LGBT myself, and I'm not offended by mods that make gay characters straight", call me "over-sensitive over pixels" and even accuse me of caring more about fictional LGBT characters than real LGBT people, and that "extremists" like me (read: people who are vocal about LGBT-phobia) make LGBT people look bad: Go away with your respectability politics nonsense and stay far away from me.

I am far from the only LGBT person who hates mods that turn canon gay characters straight, so do not think you know better than any other LGBT people just because you are "not as over-sensitive" as the rest of us. Also, I am active in my local LGBT community in real life, so do not even dare to assume I do not care about real life LGBT people just because I care about how fictional LGBT characters are represented in media and how they are treated by the audience. I can do both.

To any other LGBT people who agree with me and are interested in supporting my mods, feel free so message me or comment on my individual mods to express your appreciation.
