KOTOR 2 Black Screen after intro videos/textures vanishing

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have been scouring the internet to find a solution...without any success.
I recently decided to play KOTOR 2 again.

  1. I Installed the game without any problems, worked fine until the side textures (corridors, floor etc... stop displaying)
  2. Leaving the game completely and then starting the game again would fixe that temporarily
  3. The game ran smoothly at that time albeit with a very annoying problem. I chose to update my drivers to their latest version.

That's where things went south:
I see a black screen at the menu (the menu supposedly displaying new game, load etc... )
hear the sound just fine, the pointer even changes to the Kotor style blue arrow.

For your information I also have KOTOR 1 that works just fine except for one small thing: I do not see the text of the main menu (New game, load game etc...)

I have tried to

  • Add the Dantooine lag patch (editing the.ini).
  • Tried to start in windowed mode but for a reason that I can't understand, failed.

Then, desperate I tried another version, multiple cds one. Which got me the other way around : I access the menu and character creation or options just fine. But the game crashes right after the intro video once starting to play the game.

Here is the specs scan. I also added the error I obtained using the old version of the game hoping that it may help someone to help me solve that problem...

Specs scan:
Please note: I use KOTOR2 Gog version

Another question: It says above that you use "Windows XP v5.1 build 2600 Service Pack 2." Is that just Windows in compatibility mode? If so, what is your actual OS?

While we wait for someone to respond, check these threads and see if they help you out.

Hi,

Yes it is for compatibility, otherwise I run under windows 7, I do not have an AMD GPU but an Intel. And before anyone says the game can not launch with intel integrated motherboard : I was able to get to some points in the game as mentioned above and I found a thread (Can't remember where though, may have been Lucas forum) where someone was able to run it with integrated intel GPU.

Neither threads gave me any fix.

I can't get to the options with the Gog version.

In the other version of Kotor 2 (I forgot to mention that the other version I tested to check had the sith lord restoration project installed, latest version.)

Oh, it surely can launch with Intel Integrated, but you can expect some weird graphical issues sooner or later... no idea about the new drivers, though. They tend to cause problems with older games.

What experience do you have with integrated intel motherboard? Did you succeed in playing the game?

I tried to roll back to previous versions but it set me back directly to a version without open GL, Windows stock graphic card drivers

Well, the computer in question is a laptop from 2005, with XP SP2, so the results may not be comparable, but... I was able to play the game just fine, yes. Just lack of certain graphics. Most notably cubemaps, bumpmaps, grass and frame buffer effects. And videos not-crashing the game only in windowed mode, but later playing in windowed mode started to crash the graphics card, so I had to swap into no-movies-mode. My game version is KotOR Collection, so it may differ from GOG version, though. And as I said, different kind of computer.
