SalaciousCrumb 23 Posted July 7, 2017 If I use RAD Video Tools to upscale all of the .bik movies to 1080p, do I need to edit the game executable as well, or does the updated non-legacy version take care of this?
DarthParametric 3,784 Posted July 7, 2017 You don't need to upscale the videos if you are hex editing the exe.
SalaciousCrumb 23 Posted July 8, 2017 You don't need to upscale the videos if you are hex editing the exe. I don't think HEX editing the unencrypted executable upscales the videos - it simply prevents the game from minimizing when playing back cutscenes, which have been upscaled beforehand. So my question still stands - does the updated Steam version take care of this?
DarthParametric 3,784 Posted July 8, 2017 For TSL, the widescreen patcher doesn't patch the forced cutscene res, unlike the K1 patcher does. If you hex edit these offsets in the TSL EXE then the game will not try to reset the resolution when playing vids, instead it will play them at whatever resolution the game is set to. Thus there is no need to resize the videos themselves. With K1, I patched the game with UniWS, upscaled the videos to 1080p with RAD Video Tools, set compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3 and it worked like a charm - the videos now play back in 1080p and there are no black bars at the top and the bottom of the screen. How do I achieve the same result in TSL (updated Steam version)?
DarthParametric 3,784 Posted July 8, 2017 OK so you don't actually want scaling, you want an aspect ratio change. In that case, yes, the only solution is to re-encode. You'll have to crop and/or stretch, which will probably look terrible, but to each their own I guess.
