PLEASE READ THROUGH THE MOD INFO ON THIS PAGE AND THE FAQ ARTICLE FOR MY KOTOR SAME-GENDER ROMANCE MODS BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS!

1. DESCRIPTION:

As much as I love KotOR II: TSL, I have always been disappointed by the lack of same-gender romance options with any of the party members. Granted, TSL never had any fully developed romance arc to begin with, but given KotOR 1 at least has Juhani as a lesbian romance option even though her romance has less content (and is much easier to miss due to bugs) compared to Bastila's or Carth's, the lack of same-gender romance options in TSL is disappointing, in my opinion.

My Visas Marr and Female Exile Romance as well as Atton Rand and Male Exile Romance mods had been made and released as part of my same-gender romance mod project for TSL, now I present to you the next and the biggest part of my project: Handmaiden Handmaiden and Female Exile - Disciple and Male Exile Romance mod!

This mod makes the Handmaiden a romance option for female Exiles, and the Disciple a romance option for male Exiles. Players do not need to worry about any possible pronouns mix-up either because this mod will make the Handmaiden refer to a female Exile by "she/her" and the Disciple refer to a male Exile by "he/him".

If a female Exile has much higher influence with Visas than the Handmaiden, the Handmaiden vs. Visas jealousy/rivalry cutscenes will be triggered (however, be warned that this will also make the Handmaiden refuse to speak to the player for the rest of the game, unless you installed my No Jealousy Lock in Handmaiden Dialogue mod). Similarly, if a male Exile has much higher influence with the Disciple than Atton, Atton vs. the Disciple jealousy/rivalry cutscenes will be triggered.

It is worth noting that this mod also enables the romantic subtext between a female Exile and Atris, due to the fact that said romantic subtext are only available if you recruit Handmaiden as a party member.

Please note that this mod is ONLY COMPATIBLE WITH THE ENGLISH LOCALIZATION OF TSL AND TSLRCM. I do not provide support for non-English localizations of TSL and TSLRCM.

2. IMPORTANT NOTE TO MAKE THIS MOD WORK:

In order for the Handmaiden/Disciple content from this mod to take effect, you must use a save before Handmaiden/Disciple joins your party.

In Handmaiden's case, you must load a save before leaving the secret Academy on Telos. In Disciple's case, you must load a save before meeting him in the Enclave Sublevel on Dantooine. There is NO other way to add Handmaiden/Disciple in your party if you have played past the point where Handmaiden/Disciple is supposed to join your party.

3. INSTALLATION:

***** Due to the fact that this mod will make considerable amount of changes to the game's content, please read my instructions carefully and check out the "MOD COMPATIBILITY" section below before installing this mod! *****

First and foremost, make sure you have The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod (TSLRCM) installed since TSLRCM is REQUIRED for this mod to work.

!! ATTENTION!! STEAM USERS: If you play KotOR 2 on Steam, DO NOT USE THE STEAM WORKSHOP VERSION OF TSLRCM if you want to use this mod! Instead, use the installer (.exe) version of TSLRCM, which can be downloaded from Deadly Stream here.

I recommend reading this Deadly Stream post on why Steam Workshop is NOT recommended for modding KotOR 2.

After installing TSLRCM, extract the Hand_Disc_SGRomances.7z you downloaded to anywhere you like, as long as it is not within the KotOR 2 directory.

Before you install, make sure that your KotOR 2 main game directory and all subfolders are NOT set as read-only, otherwise you may get an error message that says along the lines of "[ERROR] Unhandled exception: Access violation at address...". Right-click your KotOR 2 folder and subfolders, go to Properties and uncheck the "Read-only".

Run Install.exe. You will notice that this mod provides two installation options. You may only choose ONE of these options:

  • Default Installation: This option will make the Handmaiden join a female Exile and the Disciple to join a male Exile automatically. Players will not need to do any extra actions for it to happen. However, this option does not allow players to recruit both the Handmaiden and the Disciple in a single playthough. WARNING: If you choose this installation option, male Exiles will not be able to recruit the Handmaiden. Similarly, female Exiles will not be able to recruit the Disciple.
  • PartySwap Compatible Installation: This option is for players who have installed DarthTyren's PartySwap mod, which allows players to recruit both the Handmaiden and the Disciple in a single playthrough regardless of the Exile's gender. Make sure you have installed PartySwap first BEFORE choosing this installation option!

Once you have chosen the installation option you want, and select your KotOR 2 game folder as your KotOR 2 directory path, click the “Install” button and let the installer do its job.

This mod also provides compatibility patches for players who also have installed any of the following mods:

Go to the “Compatibility Patches” folder from this mod, read the READ ME files within the subfolders and follow the instructions to make these mods work together with mine.

When you install this mod, two new folders named "backup" and “uninstall” will be created by the installer in the same folder as the installer. Do not delete the folders or any of the files within the folder if you are planning on uninstalling this mod.

The "Source" folder includes the source of the scripts used by this mod for modders' reference. Ignore the "Source" folder if you only want to install and play this mod.

4. UNINSTALLATION:

Open Install.exe and select your KotOR 2 directory where you installed this mod. From the “Tools” dropdown menu, select “Uninstall Mod / Restore Backup”, then confirm to uninstall the mod. You can also choose to delete the backup after uninstalling the mod.

Please note that if you have installed PartySwap and you want to uninstall it, you need to follow the instructions from the PartySwap mod.

5. KNOWN ISSUES:

None currently known. If you find any other bugs or problems, please let me know.

6. MOD COMPATIBILITY:

Other mods that modifies any of the following comtent will likely conflict with this mod:

  • disciple.dlg, Disciple's main dialogue file
  • kreia.dlg, Kreia's main dialogue file
  • mira.dlg, Mira's main dialogue file
  • Dialogue of the Rebuilt Jedi Enclave sequence
  • k_003ebo_enter.ncs and a_next_scene.ncs, script used for entering the Ebon Hawk and party member cutscenes on the Ebon Hawk

I have set up the installer to install this mod by patching the relevant dialogue files to improve compatibility with other content mods as much as possible, but it is still not guaranteed to be compatible with every other mods that modify the same files.

If you use any of the below mods, I have provided compatibility patches, as noted in the "INSTALLATION" section above:

This mod is not compatible with any other mod that involves putting the holorec.dlg file in the Override folder. If you want to use this mod, make sure you DO NOT have holorec.dlg in your Override folder, or Handmaiden will not be able to join your female Exile's party.

This mod is compatible with KOTOR 2 Community Patch.

If you want to use my Atton Rand and Male Exile Romance, install this mod first, then install Atton Rand and Male Exile Romance and the compatibility patch included in the Atton romance mod.

This mod is compatible with JC2's Train the Handmaiden.

If you want to use JediArchivist’s Mira Romance Mod, you must install my mod after Mira Romance mod.

This mod also makes the Visas romance scene trigger for female Exiles, while Disciple will replace Visas in said scene if you play a male Exile, so unless you want the Visas romance scene available for both male and female Exiles, if you install this mod, you will not need to install the “Visas Romance Scene” component of my Visas Marr and Female Exile Romance mod. This mod is compatible with the “Kreia’s Reference to Visas Romance” component of the Visas Marr and Female Exile Romance mod.

If you're uncertain if a mod is compatible with this mod or not, feel free to ask me.

7. PERMISSION:

You may modify this mod for personal use or show this mod in screenshots. However, do not release your mods containing assets from my mod without my permission.

You may use the k_003ebo_enter and a_next_scene scripts from this mod to make compatibility patches with your mod, but do not claim these modifications as your own.

I do not use nor support Steam Workshop, so I do not want any of my mods to be uploaded to Steam Workshop.

Compatibility around Extended Enclave is confusing.

Consider having EE and Party swap + your very own compatch for these 2, but not N-DReW25's Extended Enclave Patch.

Does one need any of the compatches you included in this mod in that case?

My current best guess is the following:

Main mod (Party swap) -> Extended Enclave patch [lowercase p] (No M4-78EP Installed) -> Extended Enclave patch [lowercase p] (PartySwap Compatible)
(skip Extended Enclave patch [lowercase p] (Extended Enclave Patch Installed [uppercase P]) - this name duplication is what makes things hard to parse)

You guessed it correctly. As long as you intend to use Extended Enclave with my mod, you need to install the compatibility patch included in my mod. In your case, since you don't use M4-78EP, and you're not using N-DReW25's EE Patch, the order of installation you need to follow is:

1. Install PartySwap

2. Select and install the "PartySwap Compatible Installation" option to install my main mod

3. Install Extended Enclave

4. Run the installer of my Extended Enclave compatibility patch, first select and install the "No M478-EP install" option.

5. Run the installer of my Extended Enclave comp patch again; this time select and install the "PartySwap Compatible" option.

Would I have a bad time if I already installed EE + your compatch before this mod?

I was following the mod build for the game, only after finishing did I look into extra mods such as this one.

If you were following r/KotOR's mod build and have already installed EE and my comp patch, do not install this Handmaiden/Disciple romance mod, since it will cause mod conflicts. That standalone EE patch was made specifically for players who use both PartySwap and EE without my Handmaiden/Disciple romance mod. That standalone patch was actually made after the release of this romance mod.

If you want to install the mods from the r/KotOR mod build as well as this romance mod, I'm afraid the only option is to reinstall your game to remove all the mods, reinstall the mods from the mod build, then when you reach the PartySwap part of the mod build, follow the steps to install my Handmaiden/Disciple romance mod, Extended Enclave and the compatibility patches.

Welp. Since I am a sucker for punishment (and gay romances), I guess we start from the beginning. There is no emotion, there is peace.

Thank you for saving me potentially a lot more headaches. :)

To be perfectly clear - one should install either the stand-alone compatch or this mod.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi, firstly thank you so much for your work. It means a lot to have these options.

I want to download this and a few others of yours as part of the Kotor 2 modbuild. I've read as much as I can find  but was hoping you could confirm and correct the order if necessary:

1. Modbuild order until install 'PartySwap'

2. Install this mod 'PartySwap Compatible Installation' directly after 'PartySwap'

3. Install Extended Enclave

4. Run the Extended Enclave compatibility patch from this mod twice: first with 'No M478-EP install' and second with 'PartySwap Compatible' options

5. Install 'Alternate Revan Romances REDUX'

6. Install 'Dahnis Flirt Option for Female PC' (not attached to this one if it is going to cause any difficulties)

7. Install 'TSL Improved Party Outfits' (not attached to this one if it is going to cause any difficulties)

8. Continue with modbuild order

I'm pretty confident with most of it, but not so much steps 5, 6, and 7 - wondering if they might interfere with other mods that come after them in the modbuild. Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, you got the installation order correctly. Dahnis Flirt Option for Female PC and TSL Improved Party Outfits are compatible with all my mods, and they should be compatible with the r/kotor mod build as well.

Once you install Kreia's Fall In-Game Cutscene when you are following the mod build, you need to install my compatibility patch from this Handmaiden/Disciple romance mod to make my mod compatible with Kreia's Fall In-Game Cutscene.

Did you read the FAQ article of my same-gender romance mods for KotOR 2 first before posting your comment?

Quote

Q: I am using your Handmaiden romance mod while playing as a female player character, but Handmaiden does not join my party after I leave the Telos Academy!

A: If Handmaiden does not join your female Exile's party when you are using my Handmaiden romance mod, the possible causes for this happening include:

  • You did not install my mod correctly: Either you get errors when installing the “Default Installation” option, or you did not install DarthTyren's PartySwap mod first before installing the “PartySwap Compatible” option of my mod.
  • You have a holorec.dlg file in the Override folder, either from a mod you are using or a mod you previously used. If there is a holorec.dlg in your Override folder, delete it.
  • You may have some leftover Steam Workshop folders in your Steam directory that overrides the portion where Handmaiden is supposed to join your party. To solve this, go to the Steam Workshop folder in your Steam directory (/\Steam\SteamApps\Workshop\), and delete all the sub-folders in the Steam Workshop folder.
  • SImilar to the above, you may have some leftover files from a mod you used in your previous playthrough in your KotOR 2 game directory that interferes the portion where Handmaiden is supposed to join your party. The best way to solve this is to uninstall your game, delete your KotOR 2 game folder entirely, and then re-install the game and the mods you want to use.

Which one of the above possible reasons might apply to you?

The mod seems to be working normally, the only problem that I have is that the Influence gained notification with Handmaiden doesn't appear in points where it should.

I seem to still be gaining Influence but the game just doesn't show me, what is causing this problem?

Did you change any of the Feedback settings in your game?

The issue I'm talking about is exclusive to Handmaiden's Influence gain, with other characters the Influence notification appears just fine.

@Wolfsiege Do you not get any influence gain notifications from Handmaiden at all, or is it just certain points of influence gain? Exactly at which point(s) of influence gain with Handmaiden that you did not get any notification? Are you sure this issue only happens after installing my mod?

All the points where I know you gain influence with her, in none of them the notification seems to appear.

I don't know if this information helps but I'm playing the GOG version with the only mod installed being the restored content one and this one. So the problem doesn't seem to be caused by any mod. This doesn't make the game unplayable or anything, since I'm still am gaining influence with her and I remember where and when to get it, it's just that the notification for her doesn't appear.

I tested it before and playing as male without the mod I still gain the influence notification, so I'm sure this mod seems to be the only cause.

I'm now just playing this way anyway but still is kinda annoying.

I see on opportunity if I can record this to show you. (As a screenshot would be useless.)

@Wolfsiege I just tested my mod again on the GOG version of the game. I never had issues with getting in-game notifications about gaining influence with Handmaiden, including after sparring with her or selecting the dialogue options that will gain Influence with her.

swkotor2-2023-08-04-16-04-46-733.png

So I'm afraid I have zero clue about why you cannot get these notifications.

I'll categorize this under "Weird Kotor 2 bugs that only happen to me." then...

Y'know, I played every single famous game known for bugs and somehow managed to experience no bugs in all of them but Kotor.

Everybody complains how Skyrim, Oblivion, New Vegas, Fallout 3, and Fallout 4 are bug messes but I somehow managed to experience no bugs in any of them.

But Kotor 2 is different, I've experienced more bugs in this game than any other, It's one of the reasons I don't play it as often as other games.

I have the mod installed and Handmaiden joins my party, but when I make it to the enclave in Dantooine, Disciple still joins my party and I don't know what happened.

Are you using PartySwap? Are you using any other mods? Did you choose the Default installation or PartySwap compatible insallation option?

When installing, I get 40 warnings of "Warning: Unable to find a field label matching [x] in [y], skipping...", with kreia.dlg, 650jedi.dlg, krehand1.dlg, and 904kreia.dlg as the files for [y] (also get it for the Kreia reference to visas romance component of the visas mod when I installed it after). Is this normal  and something covered by compatibility patches, or do I have some incompatible setup?

No, these warnings are not normal. Did you make sure you have installed TSLRCM first before installing my mod? Are you using any other mods? Did you make sure you point the installer to your game's main folder, and not the override folder? Which platform do you play KotOR 2 on?

Yeah, I'm using TSLRCM and way too many other mods to count. And the rest of the installation went normally, and it's on PC. I attached the backups of the files that had the issues.

I believe the incompatibility comes from SLM 2021, as besides TSLRCM, PartySwap, and Extended Enclave, that's the only mod that touched all 3 of those files.

Did you install my mod after SLM? Are you using M4-78 Enhancement Project?

I would suggest you keep track of all the mods you installed and the order you installed the mods. It is recommended to list all the mods you installed when you are reporting issues with a mod, because you can never know if a certain mod you thought might not be the cause of mod conflicts turns out to be the case. Sometimes mod conflict could happen due to incorrect installation order.

I recently updated both PartySwap and Handmaiden and Female Exile - Disciple and Male Exile Romance mods, so I would also recommend you reinstall your KotOR 2 game, and install the latest version of my mods to see if you still have problems with installing my mods.

It was definitely after, this is an old install that I'm updating (after doing so a few times, my folder is a mess), so I'll just roll it back.
