About This File

WARNING: 11/29/22 - It appears that the "big" font size category is causing crashes for people attempting to open certain lockboxes in the Taris Undercity. Other sizes, such as "verybig", are unaffected. I will be working to recreate and fix this issue over the weekend. For now, I recommend players either choose a size that isn't "big" or uninstall this mod until the issue is resolved. Sorry for any inconvenience!

Have you tried playing KOTOR 1 at high resolution? Then you may have noticed the text does not scale properly. As a result, text can look  embarassingly small.

Fortunately, this mod contains an assortment of font files that the game can use. They are organized by various sizes with the 3 kinds of text the game uses; they are also interchangeable!

Using these files should give players an easier time when playing in high resolutions, customizable to everyone's needs. Hopefully everyone who wishes to play KOTOR 1 in high resolution will have a more enjoyable experience, and that one of the more common problems facing the community has been properly addressed.

The attached file is a compressed archive that contains a ReadMe file, and a folder containing each set of fonts.

READ THE README FILE BEFORE INSTALLING!

The ReadMe contains an important explanation of what each font folder is, and instructions as to how to properly install the mod.

Improper installation could lead to very unreadable text!

DISCLAIMERS:

  • You will NOT be able to see small numbers, the count of grenades for example, via the HUD.

This is a problem with the game itself & how it handles larger text inside smaller HUD elements; I am unable to fix this. The game is simply too old and we don't have access to its source code (yet).

  • This mod is NOT compatible with KOTOR 2 TSL.

This mod only exclusively works with KOTOR 1. If you are using the Steam or Mobile versions of KOTOR 2, you shouldn't be experiencing this problem anyways.

  • As far as I know, there are no compatibility issues with other mods.

However, if you come across any problems or something not working as intended, please let me know here or via my Discord: Xela#6419

  • If you are only playing the game at 1080p or less, this mod may not be necessary.

Text only stops scaling up to 1080p resolution (as far as I know). It's possible this mod will only cause issues if you play the game at less than 1080p resolution.

  • These fonts were NOT my creation!

They were found and extracted from the Russian  🇷🇺  version of KOTOR which inexplicably has larger fonts with a variety of sizes, on top of being able to work in English as well. I was also not the first person to discover these files, that credit belongs to user Drazgar!

https://deadlystream.com/profile/44945-drazgar/

I do not claim these files to be my own, I simply uploaded them here to share with the community after not finding them anywhere else.

Released

The ReadMe has been updated to include a more clear explanation of the mod and the installation process, and my current contact information.

There are no functional changes to the mod, as the font files remain unchanged.

Works good but there is a problem if you use anything but default font size for dialogue description. In the inventory menu you cannot see item quantity of any of your items. Unfortunately inventory text is the same as dialogue.

Unfortunately, there is nothing i can do to fix this. I'm sorry!

EDIT: An explanation behind why it doesn't work has been added to the ReadMe and this page.

Is there a chance to get a version with umlauts, to use this for example with the german game version?

These dialog files were extracted from the Russian version of the game. It's possible that this version might have German compatible files as well, but I am uncertain. I do not have access to the Russian version of the game anymore.

Can also confirm. Everything else but the dialogue description sizes works like a treat, though.

This works really well, but one note:

I have the following mods installed after upscaling to 2560x1600.

1. Fade GUI Fix

2. Upscaled Menus/HUD/Etc

3. Main Menu Widescreen Fix

4. HD Menus and UI Assets

THEN I installed this larger text font.  Everything was great except the load/save screen becomes mis-aligned again, and some of the small "XP gained" type windows also.  Everything is still useable, just wanted to point out that inconsistency.

Thank you for this mod, it's fantastic even with the limitations I noted.

I have played the game in full 4K, I encountered this issue as well. I spent a couple hours figuring out what is going on, and I believe the solution was to change the order in which these mods were installed. I would try installing this mod first, then do the rest and see if that works for you.

This mod works great. There is a slight error with special Characters from non english languages. I play the game in German so
ä, ö, ü
are not displayed corretly unfortunatly

It looks like there are some russion charaters in the text instead.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

These fonts were found and extracted from the Russian version of the game, which most likely explains why Cyrillic characters are appearing here.

The font files contain English and Russian characters only, as far as I know there are no larger text fonts that include German characters.

The way this game does text is by reading from sets of two files; an image file containing every character in alphabetical order, and a text file that gives the game information about which characters are located where on the image file. The game will then essentially copy and paste each individual character it needs, and form them to the text we see on-screen.

My theory of what is going on here is that the Cyrillic characters you see are in the same places that "ä, ö, ü" are expected to be, since you're using a German copy of the game. Since the game blindly trusts what the image and text files are saying each characters are, it will display it regardless even if it's incorrect.

The only fix I think would work is by manually editing the image file, and replace the Cyrillic characters with the proper German ones. This wouldn't be too difficult if you knew what you were doing. I might be up to doing this myself if there is enough of a demand for it.

Otherwise, the only thing you could do is make the game run in English or simply ignore the issue.
