Results for Mod of the Year 2017

Hello everyone, welcome to Deadlystream. This is the second time we have had our Mod of the Year contest. Just like last year we had great turnout and participation.  Stay tuned for the Community Member of the Year 2017 nominations that will be coming shortly.

Thanks to everyone who made the amazing mods that were nominated, and thanks to all who voted! This year we ran things a bit differently, with different categories and classes, if you have feedback to the new way we ran things then please leave a comment below.

And now, the results!

Best Added/ Restored Content Mod:

Best Visual Enhancement Mod

Best Tweaks / Enhancement Mod

Best Bugfix Mods

Best Upcoming/ WIP Mod

And finally the overall winner of Mod of the Year 2017

Congratulations to all who won awards, and thanks to all who made mods and participated!

Personally I liked having K1 and TSL separated, more winners and more to vote on. Also, when combined with the 'no vote' option, it meets the needs of people who only/mostly play one or the other.

I am conflicted about the Upcoming / WIP category. On the one hand, I've never tried a pre-release mod, but on the other, I do have a lot of respect for the people who are able to document their progress and keep the community involved.

Just my two cents.

Thanks to all the organizers for keeping this tradition going, and to the people who submitted nominations.

Gotta say, I'm glad to see Kexikus Full Jedi Council mod win!

I second SithHolocron's position, I don't agree with the WIP/Upcoming mod as a voting option.

Also, that would have been something I would have wanted to know before the nomination phase ended, but I assume that was added in a rush.

Additionally, ndix UR has a fair point about voting for different games, I really enjoyed that.

Congratz to the winners and to the MotY winner Leilukin!

Congratulations to all that won.

As ndix UR pointed out, I would also like for a separate K1 and TSL for the same reasons.

For next year though, don't have Upcoming/WIP mods as a category. Because chances are I will win that category every time as I'm the only one with Demos of upcoming mods and that isn't really fair on everyone else who has already completed their mods and don't win. Instead, have WIP mods appear in their appropriate category, for example, GenoHaradan Legacy and the K1 Gameplay Improvement mod should appear in the best added/restored content mod section. At least that way it's fair for everyone.

Will there be a member of the year 2017 or will that just be skipped?

I'd like to quote a post from Kexikus from the voting thread which I couldn't reply to before

While I disagree with your reasoning, I do agree that having to vote in every category is rather annoying as that forced me to vote in a category where I didn't know any of the contenders (IIRC it was actually the WIP category).

I don't mean any disrespect but shouldn't we be voting for mods based on what the mod has to offer/how much effort went into the mod not how well we know the modder who made it. Though I can completely understand why you wouldn't want to play Demo mods.

That will be coming shortly. This post was delayed because of the site maintenance  and I dont want CMoTY to compete with this either.

I'm not sure how pertinent this may be, but I contest your point about your WIP being the only one who would win next year and the following years...

That just doesn't make sense to me, last year we had several WIP threads. And next year we will have plenty more.

Also, why don't you just PM kexikus, instead of asking that question here in MotY, seems very out of place.

You might be reading into his post a bit too much.

In general, knowing the categories before nominating would be very helpful

My 2¢.

Bring back separate K1 and TSL categories.

The sub-categories were not great. I'd suggest taking the time between now and the next awards to discuss and lock down some suitable sub-categories with community involvement.

Get rid of WIP awards.

Do not allow self-nomination.

Make the criteria the full calendar year and move the voting phase to later in the new year when more people are around. Mid- to late-Janurary maybe.

Make the active award phases more visible. Perhaps this is something that can be improved with the pending site updates.

Forcing votes in all categories is a bad idea.

Add some user badges like LucasForums used to have. Winners can get a little trophy badge. That was on vBulletin, but I'm sure Invision can get something similar.

There should be some presentations of stats (after voting is concluded) of things like "most downloaded mod", "most viewed mod", etc. in totality (all mods, not just the nominations). Not necessarily awards per se, just information on what happened with various mods that year. I doubt that the majority of mod endusers actually even join the site, and if they do it's likely just to bypass the guest download restrictions, so the award nominations are likely highly skewed by the biases of a small subset of active posters.

Yes, we do have many WIP threads but my WIP mods are actual functioning Demo mods people can download and play, that's why they got into the Moty. Many people do not upload Demo's of their mod thus it would only be my mods in that category, I would win because there is no competition.

True, felt relevant at the time.

That would be a very cool reward for the winners.

Really didn't expect to win this one. Thanks for the support guys and congratulations to all other winners!

Some suggestions from my end / replies to other suggestions:

I also prefered having K1 and TSL separated, but it's not really a big deal as long as the categories are good.

Have the option to not vote in a category right from the beginning so that one isn't forced to vote randomly.

About WIP mods: I like having that category, but I think it shouldn't be limited to Demo mods. In fact those should just be added to the standard categories, but for the WIP category one could just use the threads from the WIP section. It could be renamed to something like "Mod that most people look forward to" and really just be a vote on future mods that people are excited about.

That's exactly why I wanted to have the "No vote" option, as I haven't played the WIP mods and in this case didn't always follow your WIP thread, I couldn't tell what the mod has to offer. So I was forced to either vote randomly or not at all and the latter seemed like the fairest thing to do.

I would like to thank everyone who has voted for my mod! Your support is very much appreciated!

I would like to thank everyone who has downloaded and used my mod, who has left comments to support my mod, and feedback that help me improve my mod.

I would also like to thank fellow LGBT fans of KotOR a lot, as the main reason I made my KotOR 2 same-gender relationship mods in the first place was due to our shared frustration with the lack of same-gender romance options in KotOR 2. The support from fellow LGBT fans to my mod(s) are a huge motivation for me.

That is a really good idea, though there'd have to be some sort of requirements for WIP Threads being nominated as I'm sure you'd know there have been many big promising mods with modders that don't even try to deliver.

Ah, that makes sense. I thought "contender" meant the modder, not the actual mod, my mistake.

Definitely. I think it would have to be a mod where "significant" process has been made this year. That's of course very vague but I'm sure that the MotY team could make that decision for the nominated mods.

One other thing I didn't say before is that I really like DPs idea of having badges as awards.

As some pointed out, Deadly Stream polls force you to vote for all questions. That's why last year I added a "decline to vote" option, and did this year as well, just a little late. Sorry for those who didn't see it, and abstained from voting.

We chose the timeline based on data suggesting that forum activity peaks in the month of December, that's why we did it a month early last year and again this year. We can change it though so it is less confusing and includes all mods for a whole year.

I agree that separating the mods into K1/TSL categories is better. We will bring that back next year.

Perhaps a separate WIP voting could work, with certain requirements for the WIP. It could encourage some forum activity.
