Revan: Rogue Jedi Fan Film Trailer

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

We put up a trailer for our next big KOTOR Machinima project. Myself, DarthYcey, and JCarter426 animated the footage you'll see below. As usual, Kevin Smets (KOTOR_Trilogy) was our director and voiced Revan here. Promise you haven't seen KOTOR like this before. And almost all of it was done in game ;)

Yes, it was time to finally use it. :) Getting riders on top of it in game, not easy but I'm glad the Obsidian left it in the game.

Though I did have to scale it up 250% to be the proper size it's meant to be...

This looks pretty great, not gonna lie!

The Malak armor is badass.... I would have used Sexy Malak there, but I can't blame you ;)

This looks better than Rogue One.

I thought he said "Bastila's war droids."  LOL.

Awesome!
looking foward to it.

"Thanks to Brian DiDomenico for his awesome sound mix"
I take it it's custom mix for the trailer?

Also, @1:23; I thought that head wasnt available in TSL? At least I can't seem to find it.
(dont want to hijack the thread with questions like this tho)

Glad to see those drexl models put to good use

Yeah, there's actually a story to that. I first learned of them years and years ago, 2008ish, but the models are incomplete, each has something different missing, so I immediately dismissed them. When we started working on the film, I recalled the models, and more importantly I recalled that one of them was animated. Some of you may recall my http://deadlystream.com/forum/topic/4758-seeking-help-to-restore-flying-drexl/http://deadlystream.com/forum/topic/4758-seeking-help-to-restore-flying-drexl/]request about getting it textured - turned out RedRob had already done it, and VP got it over to me. So I knew we had to do something with it, and here we are now. :D

The other guys thought I was crazy at first, but Jenks and I (mostly Jenks) got it to work and we have a special use for the in the film planned.

Thanks, guy. That's a custom design I did, and I'm a little proud of it because it was my first time working with new geometry on characters (Malak's skirts and the gold shoulder trim). Sadly, the visuals for the teaser were locked down over a week ago... any later and we certainly would've had second thoughts on Malak's attire.

Her head actually is in the game files, although unused in the game.

Brian DiDomenico is our sound guru, he took our dialogue and music and added the SFX you hear in the trailer - mixing the final result. He did a fantastic job! And please, ask any questions. I'm not a modder in the traditional sense - most of what I make is only viable for filming our movie using the game's assets and engine. But it's fun to share what we've created with the KOTOR community and showing what we've created, which recently has meant pushing the game to a whole new level.

This right here...it's important to us that the community sees this, and hopefully supports us.  For us, this is taking things to a whole different level...getting fans to see the game as more than just a longplay, with or without mods, especially with all the new tips and tricks we've come up with.  Hopefully fans are as excited to see these films as we are to make them.  We're going to be in pre-production for a while, but stay tuned for more updates along the way!

I love how on-point the dialogue is. It feels like a cool successor to the Kotor comic series and a sort of bridge between the two storylines

The Mandalorians invading Taris and Alek Squin-whatshisname

Fun fact, I recently found that the stupid Sq name for Malek was actually supposed to be an alias but the community took it as his actual last name rather than as the writer intended-

deciding that inaction was basically the same as leaving countless worlds to die were nice to see in the Kotor engine.

Are you planning to have any other events mentioned in both the comics and games (Like Serroco, the jedi who killed their students, or Mandalorians actually riding Basilisks) in the project?

I'm glad you like it. :D The writing is probably the biggest change here compared to our previous works, more than all the new characters and locations and technical developments. All that's business as usual, really, and derived from the writing. It's a totally different story than the one in the games.

Well, that's a complicated question. I believe for the most part we're covering parts of the timeline that haven't been shown before, which will help us avoid stepping on the comics' toes too much. There are certainly things we like and will reference, but there also might be some things we maybe don't agree with or have to be ignored or changed a bit to fit the film's pacing, One example I can give without much spoilers is how the comics handled Revan and Malak's involvement in the war. They made it out to be a mercy corps thing that the Jedi Council authorized, which I feel goes against what was established in the games, so we're not mentioning that. But for the most part the answer is yes.

I'm not sure if we'll show the old style basilisks, though... I'm worried it would look silly on film, and there's probably a good reason Obsidian didn't go there. Although I do still consider them part of the film canon's history (back in the Great Sith War) and there's a bit of a reference to that in the script.

And it shows. You've captured that sense of uncertainty and dread felt by the Jedi Council so well, as any action they do could and will have catastrophic consequences. You really feel like they're the ruling party during its last days of stability fighting a losing battle to maintain the peace.

I totally agree with you about how the comics handled Revan and Malek. It just felt incongruous to the cold reception you get on Dantooine, especially if the Council already knew about them leaving and even accepted it.

-Personally, I felt the few chapters about Revan and Malek in the comics were the weakest aside from that Vector Arc (Man, that was bad), but overall the comics have held up otherwise.-

Yeah, I completely understand why Chris Avellone wasn't a fan of the "proper" Basilisks, but I still think he didn't "get" the awesomeness of the notion of guys in medieval power armor, riding giant robot dragons while wielding giant m60 plasma machine guns (I mean, I at least want a poster of that ;) )

Anyway, that aside, this is looking to be an amazing movie and I'm loving your attention to detail and general treatment of the themes and characters. :)

It's a bit silly, but kind of awesome in how silly it is. But, a big problem is that we don't have access to a model we could use for it. If we did, I would probably do a poster of it, time-permitting.

I am looking forward to seeing this film, though I have a few questions and comments.

1) At 0:25, why are there craters at the Onderon Palace? Is that scene after a battle? Are they from the Beast Rider Wars?

2) Why did you guys choose that pitch green skybox replacement? I feel like it could have been better somehow

3) At 0:52, I really like those backpacks the Mandalorians have. Really does make them look like they are ready for a battle, though I don't think it is ideal for them to have the backpacks on the bridge looking down at a planet, maybe on a Dropship but not the bridge.

4) Will Logan's lips actually move in this film? You guys clearly have the tech to make that a reality.

5) At 1:20, why is there a Twi'lek stripper fighting in a resistance, I get it's an unorganised resistance group and all but I don't think anyone would want to wear a stripper costume in a war zone.

6) At 1:25, I really like how you's made the crappy TSL Basilisk War Droid look intimidating and look like something that could have been used in a battle.

7) At 1:30, I find this scene is very cool but I feel like this is based off of the first Kotor trailer with Mandalorian Soldiers and Mandalore instead of Sith Soldiers and Malak.

Yes, I know it was in game. I thought it was hidden. At least, I can't choose it as player head, even with KSE.

Would it be possible to make it a player face ?

1) Just keeping you on your toes...it'll be fixed for the movie.

2) The skybox is a WIP and will probably change for the film.

3) Man, you really are picky with the visuals, aren't you.  Maybe there are side doors off-screen that they'll be flying out of. :)

4) Yes, they move in Ep VI Pt 2 and will do so throughout the whole prequel trilogy.

5) This is actually a character who appeared in Ep III and you'll find out more later about her origin.

6) JC magic right there.

7) Had never seen that until you mentioned it, although now that we have, we think ours is better! :)

Wait, those are supposed to be JETPACKS? I thought those were just regular backpacks.

Any particular reason they don't move in the new Ep I?

Is it the Jedi who gets blown up by the Tank Droid on the Star Forge?

Yes, they have nozzles on the bottom sides, might be hard to tell in that shot. Ha.

Logan's lips don't move in Episode I Special Edition out of consistency with Episodes II and III. A holdover from a simpler time when Xbox footage was used. It's a decision I went back and forth on many times while directing Episode 1 SE, to be honest. But ultimately, we weren't sure if an Episode II SE would be in the works (and even though it is, it's very much a side project for me while my main focus is on Revan: Rogue Jedi), and in Ep2 and 3, they don't move. So, the logic was to keep it all the same.

1) The Jetpacks were awesome.

2) I immediately understood they were jetpacks from the nozzles and the changed appearance.

3) Very excited about this film.

4) That moment at 1:14 had me flipping out.

5) 1:20 The Mandalorian flags, I love it!

6) 1:30 Mandalore looking ******** *********

7) HK-47 is in this?!?! Not sure if I should go crazy over this being a great idea, or question why he's in the Mandalorian Wars if he was constructed by Revan afterwards.

Overall, this looks like a great film.

Yes, jetpacks...they'll be animated, in-game with actual flame to propel them.  You probably remember the rising Mandalorians shot through the fog in the middle of the trailer.  Those jetpack animations and visual effects were all done in-game, and you'll see more of the same, and more in the actual movie.

The reason the original trilogy doesn't have moving lips is because the Kaydon Sentry Studios director started his series out on his own on the XBOX, which doesn't have movable lips for the PC.  After more members joined his team for Episode III, it was decided to keep the series consistent by using non-moving lips for all three movies, even though it was possible to do so at the time.

No, different Twi'lek.

4 - that's one of my favorite shots of the trailer!

5 - All JCarter426 for those. Have to make Taris not look so much like K1 Taris ;)

7 - Yes, HK is. You may notice his textures are different to show an unfinished state. HK is just too good of a character to introduce that late into the Revan films, so we're bending some rules.

Well, can you show it, please?

But seriously, I don't have it set it up or anything. I just know of a model of it out there. There's one in Old Republic at War.

Yes, jetpacks...

They're jetpacks. :D

Nice catch. Yeah, that's a break from canon, no question, and it's been there since day one. Mr Director wanted to have HK in the film and I replied "but in the second game he says..." and then I got over it. HK always had a bad memory. Maybe he forgot this stuff.

Logan's lips don't move in Episode I Special Edition out of consistency with Episodes II and III. A holdover from a simpler time when Xbox footage was used. It's a decision I went back and forth on many times while directing Episode 1 SE, to be honest. So, the logic was to keep it all the same.

And even before that, I offered to have them move for Episode III and even as far back as Episode II. Mr Director always declined the offer because it was never really going to work as long as he was filming on the Xbox. We're not filming on the Xbox at all anymore, so we don't have that limitation now, but it's grandfathered in for the special editions.

You may have noticed, though, that Bria's lips do move in Episode III, and they didn't in Episode II because she was also an Xbox player character. There was really no point in development in which we considered anything else, because obviously lips should move. Only Logan got stuck without them due to his abundance of screentime. But they'll move in Revan because we kind of have to make every character's lips move from scratch anyway so why not.
