Translators needed

Recommended Posts

For a few new lines which may or may not end up in 1.8. If not, they probably make a modification I will make for it.

The lines need to be translated in all languages TSLRCM is available in, which would be French (done), German, Spanish (done) and Italian.

To clarify the HK-Factory trigger;

* [You cannot visit the HK Factory at free will; it will trigger further along the main plot.]

The second set of lines are for Malachor. Any suggestions for tweaks for English are welcome too, obviously. Only the non-bolded lines need to be translated.

* {Irritated, wondering why the hell the player is talking to him while a fight is going on.}Let's deal with the targets first, then we can talk. (gblmandalore121)

* No, Mandalore. I need your expertise of Malachor to escort my team out of here.

* No, Mandalore. I need your expertise of Malachor to help my friends leave this place.

* I never went to the surface, only the sky above it. (gblmandalore084)

* So you have never been here before?

* The world is taboo to Mandalorians - we only came here when the Republic fleet gathered, and we knew it was our only chance to stop them. (gblmandalore085)

* You are here now. And I need you to help everyone get to safety.

* You are here now. But I have to face Kreia alone, so I need you all to leave. Is that going to be a problem?

* I can't say I'm happy to be back here. But I believe we can do what must be done. (gblmandalore086)

Thnx in advance!

Hah, I'd offer the translation of another language (spanish), but frankly, no spanish player would like to play a version I'd translate. And you welcome.

So you have never been here before?

Asi que tu nunca has estado aqui antes?

(I'm not sure who you are refering to with these two lines below so I'll just write both possibilities. First one is speaking only to Mandalore, second one is speaking to the entire group)

You are here now. And I need you to help everyone get to safety.

You are here now. But I have to face Kreia alone, so I need you all to leave. Is that going to be a problem?

Keep in mind that I'm from Argentina and our spanish is a little different that the one they use in Spain, some tweaks may be required to make those lines match the original translation of the game.

I never played the Spanish version so I don't know exactly how it's translated.

Anyway hope this helps and as I said before some words might have to be changed to fit better into the game.

Well, unless someone else is going to give us Spanish, that'll do.

Thank you for taking the effort to translate all that.

Now only German and Italian are left...

Hello,

Kotor 2 allows a joint venture of people who meet together and share some hope. But that's not at all a bunch of friends. Especially not two heads mature, charismatic and powerful as the Exile and Mandalore.

In the spirit of Kotor 2 and characters profiles, a mutual respect is needed that is translated into French, by the use of "vous" and not "tu".

I already modified many erroneous usage of 'tu' in Kotor 2.

MrPhil, do I have permission to make some amendments? Also, could you send me, if you agree, your other works (HK factory, and others if there is). Naturally, you keep the credit. Only the perfection of Kotor 2, for the Keeper of the Kotor Flame, is important.

Sincerely

TTLan

And the german version:

* [You cannot visit the HK Factory at free will; it will trigger further along the main plot.]

* No, Mandalore. I need your expertise of Malachor to escort my team out of here.

* Nein, Mandalore.

* No, Mandalore. I need your expertise of Malachor to help my friends leave this place.

* Nein, Mandalore.

* So you have never been here before?

* Also sind Sie hier noch nie gewesen?

* You are here now. And I need you to help everyone get to safety.

* You are here now. But I have to face Kreia alone, so I need you all to leave. Is that going to be a problem?

One thing: Since I don't own the german version of the game, I have no clue how Mandalore and the other crew members are addressed there. That would be especially important for the last line. Continuity sucks sometimes. ^^

For now I took the spanish and french versions as reference.

It's been a long while since I touched the german version (as most any mods don't work with it ;)), but I'm fairly sure that the 'du'-form is used instead of the 'sie' (the latter beeing much more polite and not really fitting in such a game IMO).

Here's how I'd translate the lines to german (german is my mothertongue):

* [You cannot visit the HK Factory at free will; it will trigger further along the main plot.]

(maybe also 'Handlung' (meaning plot more in the sense of 'action') could be used instead of 'Geschichte' (which means plot more in the sense of 'story')

* No, Mandalore. I need your expertise of Malachor to escort my team out of here.

Nein, Mandalore.

* No, Mandalore. I need your expertise of Malachor to help my friends leave this place.

Nein, Mandalore.

* So you have never been here before?

Du bist also noch nie zuvor hier gewesen?

* You are here now. And I need you to help everyone get to safety.

* You are here now. But I have to face Kreia alone, so I need you all to leave. Is that going to be a problem?

Note: This is by no means any critique of the version above. Language is a highly debatable thing. But Salamijoe raised the question of the du/sie himself and I thought it better to create a new version from scrach, rather than debating over what's to change of the one above and what not ;).

Heh, not making it easier for me. But thanks for all the translations people. Now just to check with the team wheter this is TSLRCM included (and thus we all choice which German to use ;) or just a mod I have to make (in which case it falls on me 0_0).

Heh, not making it easier for me.

Hehe, like I tried to explain, the 'Sie'-form in german is a very polite form that is used in official language, when you talk to your boss, ect. But it's IMO totally unfitting for KotOR (exept maybe while talking to the Onderonian queen :().

I'd really check with the german vanilla game though, how the teammates are usually adressed, 'Du' or 'Sie' (although I'm fairly certain that it was 'du', but as I said, I haven't played the german version for maaany a year).

Yeah, I know a bit of German :( (Dutch after all).

But it's the same with the Tu/Vous in the French version. Apparenlty you and ttlan conflict in the amount of respect that needs to be shown to Malachor.

I am not entirely certain on either, since they are definitely not going to a friendly state during the journey of KOTOR2.

There is something great in the distance maintained between the characters.

Even the agony of Atton, in the arms of the Exile, if it failed against Sion, do not bear the feeling of "familiarity" to be introduced by the use of "tu " in French.

Kotor 2 would be disfigured by a behavior of its characters which would be normal among teenagers, but completely forbidden between adults, all of which meets for the first time.

Tu is the familiar you, which demonstrates a certain closeness and informality. Use tu when speaking to one

* friend

* peer / colleague

* relative

* child

* pet

Vous is the formal you. It is used to show respect or maintain a certain distance or formality with someone. Use vous when speaking to

* someone you don't know well

* an older person

* an authority figure

* anyone to whom you wish to show respect

Someone in authority may use tu with you, but that certainly doesn't mean that you can respond in kind. You can try asking "On peut se tutoyer ?", but when in doubt, I tend to use vous. I'd rather show someone too much respect than not enough!

And, in Kotor 2, there is no doubt.

Even the exchanges between the Exile and T3-M4 are made with respect.

Only exchanges between Atton and T3-M4 might be on a familiar tone, or from a superior to a subordinate, because of the impossibility, for a thug, to develop a formal relationship with a machine.

But no. Even in an exchange where Atton gets carried away (the one that ends with Atton saying to T3: "Yeah, well, if I'm mean to you, it's because I care." - it's 003EBO_dlg\att3.dlg), Atton will use the "vous" to address to T3.

And I take the opportunity for correcting the French translation of this phrase, notwithstanding the VO :

  •
    75724 :
  • Original :
    Yeah, well, if I'm mean to you, it's because I care.

  • Old translation :
    Qui aime bien châtie bien.
    From latin "Qui bene amat bene castigat." This sentence introduces a concept of friendship which is not at all expressed in the original dialogue created by Obsidian and do not exist at all in the relationship between T3 and Atton (ie pazaak game between them!).

  • Translation updated :
    Ouais...

We are in the Old Republic, just after the time of the Legend of the Jedi, in a world of knighthood and nobility (of heart, spirit and behavior)... with thugs, bounty hunters, assassins, Exchange, the Czerkas, the Genoharadan ... and conflicts everywhere... and Siths.

And do not forget, either, before developing the game, Obsidian (as all others), are required to propose to Lucas (and Leyland ...) character profiles for approval (and Mandalore is 63 (in Mandalore years (? - Mandalore Planet beeing of terrestrial class)).

hmhm ... I'd really have to see some dialogue from the german vanilla game. I'd almost installed it right now just for that purpose, but then I discovered that my brother has the german discs at his place.

but I could think of another possibility. There is the ancient 'ihr'-form, that's not used at all anymore nowadays. but it would actually be quiet fitting for that time fo the Legend of the Jedi that ttlan speaks of.

Here's how I'd use that form:

* [You cannot visit the HK Factory at free will; it will trigger further along the main plot.]

(maybe also 'Handlung' (meaning plot more in the sense of 'action') could be used instead of 'Geschichte' (which means plot more in the sense of 'story')

I suggest some changes to improve these translated lines. They're only a little ortographic and gramatic corrections to adapt these sentences to spanish from Spain. I'm from Spain and I've played the spanish original version of the game a few times:

*No puedes visitar la fábrica de droides HK ahora mismo. Se activará más adelante en la historia principal.

*Vamos a tratar con nuestros enemigos primero. Luego podremos hablar.

*No, Mandalore.

I like to comment too that I found some mistakes in spanish version of TSLRCM 1.7. At the moment I can mention the incoherent dialogue with the crazy cat laigrek padawan and one of the dialogues of the Zhug Family in Nar Shadaa (immediately before the assault to Goto's spaceship) or a few lines that they haven't been translated (Suulri quest in Dantooine for example). I haven't finished Onderon, Korriban, the Nihilus spaceship and Malachor V yet. I offer to translate again these lines and others that you need if you want. I would like to help you in this project.

Thanks for your job! It's great!

@Hassat: I think you should go with his translation since he has played the Spanish version of TSL and he is also from Spain.

It would certainly fit better in the game even if some of the lines are almost exactly the same as the ones I did.

Hi,

the Spanish translation of Francis nailed it. I live on Madrid, so I can confirm that.

Some lines to be considered is refered to the number of people the player is talking to, and the gender of the talker. I don't know if you checked it with the game. Just in case I wish to add a few comments.

¿Así que nunca has estado aquí antes?

In case is talking to more than one person, it should be like this:

¿Así que nunca habéis estado aquí antes?

Estás aquí ahora. Y necesito que ayudes a todos a ponerse a salvo.

This works if is talking to one person, but if is talking to more than one:

Estáis aquí ahora. Y necesito que ayudéis a todos a ponerse a salvo.

Estás aquí ahora. Pero debo enfrentarme a Kreia solo, así que necesito que te vayas. ¿Va a ser un problema?

--This one depends on how many people is the player speaking to and the gender of the talker too.

1 person, talker male

More than 1 person, talker male

More than 1 person, talker female

Nothing else to add, it's just details.

:)
