WTF Steam?

Recommended Posts

Steam Brat:It is quite obvious my fellow steam brats that I have come to a conclusion, people who play video games that run under 60 FPS should be tortured for long periods of time and then they can slowly bleed to death, but five minutes before they bleed to death we should hang them!

Other stream brat: Oh how i do concur my dear friend, how atrocious can you get with gaming these days? What slobs, WAIT THERE IS A GAME CALLED STAR WARS KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC!!! IT RUNS UNDER 60 FPS AND THERE AREN'T EVEN NOBLES OR KNIGHTS IN IT *Jumps off cliff*

Steam brat:Well I suppose I will take his account, *hacks other steam brats account* OH MY GOODNESS HE HAS A GAME THAT RUNS UNDER 60 FPS, I CANNOT LIVE ANYMORE WITH THAT THOUGHT IN MY HEAD... AND TO THINK I ACTUALLY WAS BEGGINING TO NOT HATE HIM... *Turns microwave into mini-nuke and blows himself and his whole block up*.

TheDarkChocolateJedi: And that my friends was called Steamlet, by Steamsphere studios.

Definietly i did brought the coffee.

But it was more clearer because i also brought the water.

The problem isn't people requesting mods.

The issue is people going "this should be super-duper simple". If you have no idea how hard it is, just ask, not make such assumptions.

I've seen enough 'Why not just port it over to the Crysis-engie, that should take 2 interns an hour' or 'Why not do [impossible thing here], that should be so very very easy' that just it really irks me when people think game development is so much easier than it really is.

Eh, times really are changed in the last few years... Anyway, I really love those steam threads!  :hrhr:

I only read first few pots but to be fair, I agree with some things he said. Don't say it's [Persuade] option if it doesn't check your persuasion. That's lying about a skill check that's not actually there. That's stupid and pointless. I checked the DLG and that option will appear there no matter what, and fail no matter what. None skill has anything to do with it. Whole conversation is a lie.

With Force Persuade it's different because you can play with people being resistant to it like the what's-his-name Toyadarian in Episode I. Or Azkul in KOTOR II. But lying about skill checks makes no sense.

I've always looked at the trick options like that as reasonable.

You are trying to persuade them, but not everyone's going to be able to be persuaded to do something. For example, would you expect to ever be able to successfully persuade HK-47 to hug and love someone, or would you ever expect to be able to persuade a hardened criminal to go surrender to the TSF and confess their crimes?

Some people just won't do something, and it's realistic that they reflected that with these automatic no options.

And Zbyl, if you continue reading, you'll see that the guy gets absolutely fired up because this was supposedly the first persuade option you run into in the game and that it's shown to the player but never actually doable. He doesn't think a game should string you along, and he considers that facet of RPGs (what, no sense of humor with a game) to be something negative to the genre...

Sure, not everyone can be persuaded, but there's no reason to tell it checks your persuasion skill when it actually doesn't. Just leave it as a regular option, without word [Persuade] at the beginning.

(in the perfect world, we'd get rid of information about skill checks altogether as to not suggest which option is "better", but that would be a topic for another discussion)

I know that vanilla KOTOR 1 has a few of those as well. I always thought it would've been better to put [impossible] in front of the resulting text, rather than the usual [Failure], to indicate as such. Some security locks that cannot be opened no matter what have *Impossible* as the resulting text when the player tries to open them. It's odd the same was not done for impossible persuades.

It's entirely possible that this was one of many things that were cut last minute and either that [Persuade] option or the corresponding [success] or [Failure] were mistakenly left in.

Personally, I like this thing. Yes, maybe writing [impossible] instead of [Failure] would be better, but I like the fact that there are some "unpassable" persuasions.
