Why it's not okay to upload someone else's mods

Recommended Posts

Is his YouTube monetized? I suppose you could go after his YouTube channel too if that were the case...

Look whose Twitter feed we made it into!

Wat a sad person.

Seriously though, guys. Why even bother with him.

Kick 'em while they're down, I say!

But it would be harassment to go and try to start something with him on Youtube. We should focus on protecting the interests of DS and modders from the community.

Yes, how dare we call him out for breaking the rules of Steam and not following his own disclaimer. Surely we're the ones in the wrong here.

I hate people like this so much.

Well, I for one am heartbroken. I'm going to go and bathe my temples in eau de cologne. It's all so overwhelming...

Does anybody know any way to contact Shem, assuming he's still active? He might want to know that people have been uploading his mods to the Workshop without his permission.

I've already let him know. He's fine with it provided he's credited properly as author. If you want to contact him about anything else though, you can reach him via pm at lucasforums.

This 'Shroom' fellow strikes me as a complete and utter fool and lummox. Both would be equally apt in this case I suspect.

I understand the concept behind not uploading someone else's work...but is it okay to request a link to someone else's work that is already uploaded somewhere else?

For instance: Viridian Echo... I can't find that anywhere... but say someone happened to see a functional link on Russian KOTOR site X that was still functional, and uploaded with permissions back in 2009.... Then would dropping a direct link in the forums (or a PM) constitute a violation?

Now, what if that same request came in the same exact way... but the PM actually included a link to a dropfile/mega because while no one could find a link..that person just happened to have the original zip on their hard drive? Would that be a violation?

Would a forum post of "Hi, I'm looking for VE and (other list of mods...sayyyy 'Young Kreia') here." be considered an issue, especially if its generally considered that these mods are currently inaccessible by normal means? Or would good faith be assumed that should the individual receive links to those files privately, that the files themselves would be legitimate?

As has been mentioned already, sending a mod via PMs is perfectly okay. Just no posting links on the forums or status updates to uploads or repositories. Same thing with your signature.

And that Viridian Echo-Russian Site example would most likely constitute a legitimate source.

Okay, thanks it good to know. For some reason I felt it might be disallowed, as while there is a New mod request thread... there isn't any mod-link request thread (that i can find via search), and usually those threads, or the "what mod is this/where can i find x" threads are usually pretty popular in other games.

Perhaps we should look at folks having these mods in private archives as an opportunity. We can suggest they assist other moddders over at the LucasForums' thread "Mod Link Requests from PCGM, KotOR Files and other Sites" by sending them links to archives via PMs.  Milestails would probably welcome the assistance.

Never mind the fact that Milestails probably has the biggest archive... :)

But I've got a spare 1 GB on my Dropbox...

I'm usually fine when people reupload my mods to other sites (if they credit me as author), but I will not tolerate reuploading them to Steam Workshop. Reasons? I hate Steam, I hate Valve, Workshop is a broken mess for idiots which should never existed.

Can we flag Shroom's youtube videos? I think that's fair game. He'll never know who'd be responsible.

That's really weak to be honest. Don't stoop so low.

You should just turn that kind of people the other cheek.

True... But it's almost become a game. I had another immature idea. We reupload all his videos on youtube, but we get more views on our reuploaded ones. THIS one would be quite the lesson for young Shroom.

Also being ignored is not something that is going to make me happier about the situation.

I hope he enjoys his ban...
