KotOR II Loadscreen Issue

Recommended Posts

Hello, and good-day.

I've been having problems with my copy of KotOR II (Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords). First, I would like to say that KotOR II works well for the most part. There are no graphic hiccups, no sound issues, nothing. However, there is a major glitch that prevents me from being able to play the game. The glitch has the load-screen, on the main-menu, freeze. What I mean by this, is that the game crashes immediately whenever I click on "Load Game" from the main menu. I have a video that demonstrates this problem. You should find it in Attachments.

My system specs are as follows:

Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GS

Clock Speed: 2399 MHz

Physical Memory: (In other-words: A RAM) 3.99 GB

VRAM: 512 MB

Graphic Card Driver Version: 301.42

Sound Adapter: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)

Sound Driver Version: 6.0.1.5657

Operating System: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium (64 bit)

Direct X Version: DirectX 10.0 (Aug2009) or later

I have reinstalled KotOR II a number of times and it never worked. If anyone can help on how to fix this issue then please post a solution on this thread.

Well, no one knows the reason for sure, but you can load your save fine apparently after first starting a new game...

Annoying, I know... but maybe if everyone with the issue reported here we might find the cause.

Ok... I was actually having this very same problem. So I started using every known fix for any type of crash in KotOR2. I actually found the cause to this sudden crash.

The problem is fixed by using the multi-core fix. Basically create a shortcut to the swkotor2.exe file. Right-click on the shortcut, click properties, and edit the target box to add on the line: /high /affinity 1

So that the target box should look like this:

"C:\Games\SWKotor2\swkotor2.exe" /high /affinity 1

This fixed the problem for me. Of course you will have to change the target so that it matches where you installed your copy of the game. I'm basically summarising the fix that I found on the net and if you need more detailed instructions... look here: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=194324

Hi, it didn't work. :(

I've done as you posted. I created a shortcut of my KotOR II.exe onto my desktop, changed the target box to include "high/affinity/1" but the moment I select "Load Game" from the main menu, the game still crashes immediately. :(

As you can see, the line high affinity is included. The location of my kotor2.exe file is C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\SWKotOR2. What I am confused about is if I'm missing other text in the target box. For instance, I took a look at that Lucasforum thread, and I saw a different target box setup from mines. Did I do something wrong in applying the multi-core fix?

Sorry for not responding sooner.

I notice from the screen shot... you have your game installed to the "Program Files (x86)" folder. With Windows Vista or Windows 7, to my knowledge, this is always a bad thing with either the "Program Files (x86)" or the regular "Program Files" folders. With regular programs, I've never really had a problem installing there. But games tend to have problems being installed there because of the higher security that windows places on those folders. So what you need to do is uninstall the game (I know... painful ;) ) & reinstall to a completely different location. For example... I have my game installed to this location:

C:\Games\LucasArts\SWKotor2\

I created a default "Games" folder in my c: drive & out of habit now... I install all games to this folder. Even programs like Steam & Impulse are installed to that folder as I just don't want to deal with Windows security issues.

After you've done all of this... try this fix again and tell me the result. Also, as far as the shortcut is concerned... it looks fine to me. But if you want to be absolutely sure... go to the folder where the game is installed (that's after you have uninstalled & the reinstalled to a new folder) & find the swkotor2.exe file. Right click on the file & choose "Create shortcut" from the drop down box. Then edit this newly created shortcut with fix.

I hope this helps.

If the above doesn't work, try the settings seen in this recently posted guide: NVIDIA GFX Guide

Please report what steps - if any - have been of any help. Your success may mean success for others.

Hey, thanks guys! :) The Nvida GFX Guide really did help fix my copy of KotOR II. The loadscreen does not crash anymore. It turned out that Threaded Optimization in my Nvidia control panel was set to "AUTO" and that was causing the load-screen issues. Following that guide, I set it to "OFF" and unchecked the "read-only" property in my KotOR II directory. Afterwards, I tested KotOR II out to see if anything was fixed. I was very happy to see that the game didn't crash anymore at the Load Menu screen. :)

Thanks Sith Holocron for that guide, and thanks Nedan for the link to the multi-core fix and the step by step guide you posted. If it weren't for you two, I probably would never gotten this technical problem fixed. Again, thank you. :)

I wrote down the "fixing"

open the launcher. ctrl+alt+delete task manager->find launcher.exe right click set affinity->and make sure only "0." is ticked (untick "1.")

I'm pretty sure it worked because I had the same problem but this fixed it. HOWEVER, you have to do every time you play the game.

I'm having this issue as well. I've followed all of SH's compiled tips and also tried some of the solutions in this thread (except for switching the location of the installation folder). I get the same problem no matter whether I install the game on Win7 or Win10. I'll try the game folder switch, but I'm super confused, because I've installed K2 over and over on the same machine for ten years and it's never not worked.

Although the Program Files (x86) folder have never been an issue for me before, installing the game in a separate, non-protected folder on my C drive fixed the problem. Thank you Nedan for the solution! My theory is some recent Windows update ratcheted up the security on that folder.
